No originality and identity: the cases of Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco

Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco are copycats. Charice is a copycat of Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, and Celine Dion. Arnel is a copycat of former Journey frontman Steve Perry. Being a copycat is not a problem except acoustical recording has existed for a very long time. Songs performed by original performers are easily accessible and affordable in physical and digital formats.

The issue that is overlooked when analyzing Arnel and Charice is one of originality and identity. Since they just sing the material made popular by others, they come off as having no distinct identities. They come off as Asians who just desperately try to be EXACTLY LIKE Whitney Houston, Celine Dion,Steve Perry, and etc. Compare and contrast the two to non Americans who have made it/ attempted to enter the US market:

Puerto Rico: Ricky Martin,Marc Anthony (American of PR descent), Daddy Yankee, the women of Nina Sky (American of PR descent)
Colombia:Shakira
Mexico: Paulina Rubio, Carlos Santana
Spain/Philippines: Enrique Iglesias
Brazil: Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim
Americans of part or full Asian descent: Norah Jones, Don Ho, Jocelyn Enriquez
Philippines: Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas, Freddie Aguilar

The most important thing to highlight is  that all those mentioned above were not press ganged into adopting identities that were not theirs. All those mentioned were able to demonstrate their cultural identities into their works in more ways than one. For instance, Ricky Martin , Enrique Iglesias, and Marc Anthony were able to showcase Latin music and perform partly in Spanish. On the other hand, Arnel and Charice HAVE TO be like other people who have different (cultural) identities.

In addition, through anime and video games, Jpop and rock are becoming popular among certain demographics in the US. Ayumi Hamasaki, Hikaru Utada, and Puffy are followed by that demographic(s) due to gaming and anime trends. The Jpop/rock acts sing in Japanese, and they give little to no hint of attempting to be more mainstream to attract more American fans.

The Wonder Girls of South Korea toured with the Jonas Brothers. Unlike Charice, the Wonder Girl’s song was able to get radio airtime in the US. In addition, the Wonder Girls was able to grow a big fan base in South Korea (& create a dance craze throughout Asia and beyond) before heading off  to the United States. In comparison, Arnel and Charice had very little to no fan base in the Philippines before getting noticed by Americans.

A musician having no identity and originality is quite unacceptable.

EDIT—I have to give credit to this blog entry named “Filipinos Spit On Themselves By Supporting Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco”. That blog entry is quite persuasive in arguing that Arnel and Charice are copycats. In addition, it makes a point about the Filipino fans of Charice and Arnel.

It made me think that blind bandwagon jumping Filipinos are only supporting Arnel and Charice due to shared origins. Those easily fooled bandwagon Filipinos won’t be fans of Arnel and Charice if those two are Malaysian or Indonesian.

  1. MORON! LMFAO!!

    • I think I sense a lot of jealousy on your part to have made comments like this. Are you mad or disillusioned becuase us Filipinos are being recognized for the talent that we possess. Im proud to be Filipoino because of the accomplishments of Arnel, Charice and especially Manny Pacquaio. What have you controbuted to society other than spiteful and judgemental opinions about these excellent artists. You need to go and get yourself some talent and make a name for yourself. if you are Filipino to hell with your talangka mentality. MORE POWER TO ARNEL, CHARICE, MANNY AND ALL THE PREVAILING FILIPINO TALENT, YOU TRULY ARE WORLD CLASS.

  2. Unlike the Wonder Girls, Charice debuted her single NOTE TO GOD @ #44 in Billboard 100. The Wonder Girls who promoted for months barely entered and left in just a week @ #76 in Billboard. You’re a fuckin’ moron! It’s people like you who shouldnt be allowed to use the internet. Pathetic excuse of a person…

    • Pekeng Freddie
1.) The Wonder Girls have their own song while Charice has to sing material already made popular by others
2.) Tell me who got some radio airplay? I’ll give you a clue, it’s not the copycat.
3.) You can’t counter my points about originality and identity so you attack the writer instead. Typical trash Filipino behavior.

      • Read Carefully at this article from Minn.

        http://savagepacer.com/news/opinions/community-voices-what-does-future-hold-101

Note to God is being played on Christian radios across the USA. Off course it wont be played on POP stations cause it denotes religon, unlike Wonder girls.

Also Wonder Girls and all other Kpop Bands produce thier “originality” by HIRING American songwriters who already have the songs and BEATS they just translate some of the lyrics to Korean to make it KPOP.

The HIt Sorry Sorry by super Junior was conposed by Drew Ryan Scott one of charice’s song producers. He also produced the song for Wondergirl that made them a hit on ASIA.

Note to God was Billboard HOT 100 #44 while Wonder Girls is on the Billboard 2000

Your arguments wreaks of a one sided uneducated assumptions. Do your research.

        • Truth
There’s a big difference having a song composed for you versus singing the material already made popular by others musicians. The latter is karaoke, covering, mimicry, aping, etc. That is what Charice is doing. Her Note To God is not even “hers”. It’s a song originally included in Jojo’s album.

I stand corrected regarding “Note To God’s” airplay status. I completely forgot about Christian stations. How can I forget about those hotbeds of cutting edge trends?!

  3. Arnel is no copycat. He was happy in a band that did cover songs. It was pure luck that N. Schon found him on YouTube. Did you think Arnel would turn down a chance in a lifetime by saying, ‘Sorry Neil, I need to be original, I hope you don’t mind me turning the job down.’ Doh. Arnel did not TRY to sound like Steve Perry, he just happened to. Does that make it wrong just because he sounds like him? Sheez….why don’t you write about something really worth writing about. Pathetic.

    • FancyThat
Then what do you call somebody who just sings the material of others? BTW music commentators and even current/former Journey members acknowledge that the reason they invited Arnel is due to his immense similarity with Steve Perry in terms of singing.

The topic of Filipino identity and originality is worth writing about especially since the mainstream media barely even gives it a superficial glance.

      • This site is a joke. Copycats or not, I bet these Charice and Arnel are happy because they love to perform and sing, mimicking or copying. they are now known in the U.S. and other parts of the world. They have their rights and they were earning lots of money because of that. I also bet that they are earning more money than you do. Identity, originality. The hell with that. How much do earn? Identity, originality? Who cares. People will watch them no matter what. Let them perform, its better than stealing or getting hungry. Do you think Arnel or Charice worry about the media? Heck no. They will get hungry if they did.

        • Louie
It is true that Arnel and Charice have a right do as much aping or copycat as they want. Consequently, people are free to criticize them for their lack of originality, and you have the freedom to defend them.

You keep harping about those two earning that much money. I don’t give a damn about their earnings since they have little to artistic qualities. They are the equivalent of pathetic American remakes of world cinema: tired, unimpressive, and banal.

Louie, I have to thank you for your post. You demonstrate the isang kahig isang tuka loser mentality of some Filipinos. You’re satisfied with the mere scraps that result from being a copycat. On the other hand, those with originality or those who can balance commerce with art are the ones who have millions and the awards from their own peers and critics.

  4. Why don’t you search Youtube for 8 songs that was composed for her.

    Always You
    Amazing
Pyramid — debuting tonight in dance floors all over north america and remixed by non other by the legendary DJ Barry Harris who is currently on the Top 10 of the Billboard charts
    In this song
    Reset
    Electric
    Domino
    Thank You
    Breath Out

    That should keep you busy…

    • That’s after the fact that she has two albums full of covers/ revival songs. Charice will always have a reputation of a copycat. Charice is a copycat. NO ifs and buts about it. Even garage bands have their own original songs even if they’re still self published! Perhaps she will shed her aping reputation if she wins a Grammy Award.

      • A lot of stars do cover songs before or during their height of fame. Celine Dion used to cover Whitney Houston’s songs. Diana Ross had her own version of “I will survive” etc. Whitney Houston and Celine Dion covered songs at the height of their career. Blessedly, youtube came along. People who love singing don’t care if it’s original or not. Watch youtube. Fans covers Charice’ “Pyramid.” Bet you if youtube came along at Celine Dion or Whitney HOuston’s time, you will trash them also because they will cover songs to be recognized. Case closed. No one is original but you may call them unique.

        • Don
All copycats are worthy of severe criticism if you ask me.

  5. Cardcrusher, hope you won’t be tortured with this… Happy reading, relax and God bless!!

Journey Top DVD Chart With Live In Manila

Journey’s two-DVD Live In Manila, capturing the band’s historic concert in Manila, Philippines earlier this year, debuts at the top of Billboard’s Top Music Video Sales chart , marking the first time the band has topped this chart

Journey’s 2005 release Live In Houston 1981 – The Escape Tour peaked at number nine. Live In Manila has the second best DVD debut sales week of 2009, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Performing more than two hours’ worth of classic favorites, as well as new hits from the band’s latest album Revelation, Live In Manila documents the triumphant homecoming of the band’s singer Arnel Pineda on March 14, 2009

Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, and Deen Castronovo returned to Pineda’s homeland to introduce him as their new lead singer to a crowd of nearly 30,000. By the time of the Manila concert, more than 800,000 copies of Revelation—the band’s first album with Arnel—had been sold, and were supported with sold-out shows all over the world
The Live In Manila DVD, like Revelation, is being sold exclusively at Walmart in North America

Thanks for dropping by. I’m not bothered by that news at all. I’m actually happy because Arnel will earn more money.

What bothers me is the new Filipino “fans” of Journey. Are thy authentic fans of the band and their previous work? Or did they become fans because they hired a Filipino to be the new frontman? My instinct tells me it’s the latter. I doubt the Filipino bandwagon jumpers would be fans if the band’s frontman is a Malaysian (or Thai or Idonesian or Vietnamese, etc) guy.

      • If you just see the videos of Arnel the audience were mostly non-filipinos. Arnel even won 2 Awards including Best Vocalist in Chile over the other bands. Fans wouldn’t watch their concert if they’re not really fans. However, you can’t stop Arnel haters to hate him if they’re Steve Perry’s diehard fans.

  6. Hello all, my advice is to not post anything here anymore since it is obvious that the obstinacy of this girl will never fade.

She will always repeat what she is saying no matter how valid your argument is.

So leave this site and forget about it.

It’s not worth your time, believe me.

    • Advisor
You are so full of B.S. assumptions. I stand corrected by the points made here( IE “Note To God” getting some airplay at those uber trendy Christian stations). How’s that for stubbornness? You just have nothing to contribute in overturning my argument.

  7. You are probably the dumbest person I’ve ever seen on the web. Actually, there are worse, but you are definitely in the Top 5. Ignorance isn’t bliss dipshit. Continue living in your world where you think Filipino artists are copycats. Continue replying back to every post you get because you’re so f**king lame that you have nothing better to do than reply to your hate mail. Continue being an ignorant cunt who isn’t capable of even looking at different reasonings. YOU’RE PATHETIC. Obviously some Filipino crab who thinks highly of themselves. Arnel & Charice will ALWAYS be better than you. All artists cover songs numbnuts. Are you that naive to actually think that every other artist aside from Charice & Arnel all suddenly became famous for playing their ORIGINAL songs? Give me a break. NOBODY comes up with their own songs. Every artist is a copycat because they either cover songs to get noticed or they draw inspiration from other artists & emulate the sound they have. You’re just some bitter piece of shit who has no life. Keep hating on Arnel & Charice because they only keep making people like you look even more stupid by the minute.

    • Pekeng Freddie
Where did I write that Filipino artists are copycats? Note that I only singled out Arnel and Charice, and only in their dreams they are artists. Being a glorified karaoke singer does not make one an artists. BTW, I gave credit to Filipino artists/ musicians like Apl de Ap, Freddie Aguilar, and Jocelyn Enriquez.

Here’s the problem, Arnel and Charice are just singing old, popular songs. Whitney Houston might not write or produce her songs, but guess what? She has other people to make it for her. What do Arnel and Charice do? They pick up leftover old songs like Payatas garbage pickers.

BTW get a clue. Mimicry like what Charice and Arnel are doing is different from creating a song obviously influenced by another source.

This person compared and contrasted the copycats Arnel and Charice to some AI contestants. While both are doing karaoke, the AI contestants got their own songs. It sends a different message doesn’t it.

I might be dumb, but you’re dumber. I write coherent and intelligent responses while you are a rabid, onion skinned fool.

  8. BTW: Airplay or not, CHARICE’s “Note to God” debuted @ #44 in the Billboard 100! AND she only performed/promoted NTG one time. Your so-called “Wonder Girls” that you put on such a high pedestal had to promote nonstop, tour w/ the Jonas Bros., etc JUST to barely crack the Billboard 100 #77 and they only lasted for one week! Now where are they? NOWHERE! With all that constant promoting and barely worth mentioning guestings, they haven’t done ANYTHING in the US. I feel sorry for people like you. Detractors. Always trying to start shit that sounds so ridiculous to the rest of the world. Charts & downloads & requests don’t lie! If the rest of the world thought Charice was such a copycat, why would they even bother purchasing her songs?! Obviously, you’re just crying out for attention. Well, you got it. All these people who commented are paying attention to you & guess what? THEY ALL THINK YOU’RE STUUUPPIIIDD! Anything new to you? I doubt it.

    • Pekeng Freddie
I didn’t put the WonderGirls on a “high pedestal”. WonderGirls was only mentioned once on my post, and they’re not a critical part of the entry I wrote.

Show me the link where Charice’s lasted longer in the Billboard chart. Just to let you know, Charice’s song was only played in Christian stations. They’re not mainstream. They’re outliers compared to the stations that play fashionable music.

      • Radio play doesn’t make an artist, it’s the BILLBOARD CHARTS. On the same leveled playing field Billboard Hot 100, Charice & the WonderGirls both got on the charts. The difference: PLACEMENT. Charice peaked @ #44. The WonderGirls, #77?… Take into consideration, Note to God was A RELIGIOUS THEMED SONG! You may think it might not be mainstream enough, but obviously it was mainstream enough to hit the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100. The WonderGirls so called viral hit in Asia couldn’t even penetrate the Top 50 in the US after marketing their song for months on end. So, here’s the real comparison; A RELIGIOUS THEMED SONG vs A VIRAL MAINSTREAM SONG FROM ASIA. Who won? I’ll let your viewers figure that out. Charts don’t lie.

        • Pekeng Freddie
Radio play is part of the formula that determines the Billboard Hot 100 chart. You have yet to show that Charice stayed longer than one week on the Billboard 100. Also note that WonderGirl’s “Nobody” has been released in Asia and worldwide months earlier. Their MV for that single is quite old already.

  9. Charice will never get the exposure that WonderGirls now enjoy!! Dream on Charice lovers!! She is done for in the USA or internationally!!

CHARICE IS NOBODY AND WILL ALWAYS BE A NO TALENT COPYCAT. I have been arguing this point for two years now. To this day, I am still correct: Charice have amounted to nothing in the Philippines or the USA. As for people who don’t know about her low budget concerts in the US, nobody cared about her. People went to see other artists who were in the same concert, not Charice! It was not a solo concert!!! If Charice had her own concert in the US, it would be a joke and be barely occupied.

Great writing cardcrusher! You have the support of all the people who appreciate good original filipino artists!!

Long live Manny Pacquiao!! He is the only Filipino to truly be proud of today!!!!!!!

    • Luke
Thanks for dropping by. I’m glad I’m not the only one confused as to what others see in Charice. I’ve been questioning others why they like her, and I’ve gotten a few people to become upset because of my views about Charice IRL not to mention online!

I don’t think Charice has enough fans in any country to do a concert tour. She’ll probably be an opening or supporting act to some other popular musician. I’d be impressed if she’s included in one world tour even as the opening act.

I’m no Charice fan, but even I’m wondering how her upcoming album will fare. She might have a shot if the label promotes it, but I’m getting ahead of myself. I’ll be there to bash it if it flops or it’s too generic. I’ll probably blog about it even if it succeeds

As for Filipinos in entertainment/ sports to be proud of, I’ll add Brillante Mendoza and Lea Salonga. The former won as best director in the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

    • What exposure Luke? You mean the one where they report to their Korean media and tell them about their “accomplishments”. Or you mean the one where their manager has to BEG/PAY their way into their second-rate shows, performances, guestings. To the rest of America & the Western World, the WonderGirls don’t exist. It may be somewhat the same for Charice, but at least she’s getting known. She’s getting guestings from top-rated shows worldwide. She’s performed a one of the main guests throughout venues in North America. As for your WonderGirls, they were only “opening acts” for the Jonas Bros. Not only did they fail to create any buzz from touring with a group that has a HUGE following of tweens, but they failed to chart in the Top 50 of Billboard’s Hot 100. You can keep living in your fantasy world, but one day you’ll need to snap out of it. Regardless of whether Charice becomes entirely famous in the US, she’s accomplished more than the WonderGirls in their journey to getting noticed in mainstream America.

      • Pekeng Freddie
Enough of the Wonder Girls. You already made those points. Stop repeating them. Luke didn’t even bring up the Wonder Girls.

  10. Hello IDIOTS OF THE WORLD! ie. LUKE & CARDCRUSHER. Not only are you two the dumbest people I’ve ever had the inconvenience of running into, but you’re both the most ignorant Filipinos I’ve known. Don’t try to deny you’re Filipino and pretend you’re someone else cause obviously you blog like one and you act like one. A STUCK UP ONE. To the rest of the world, people like you don’t matter. Keep talking shit about these two artists. It doesn’t affect anybody, but you. Negative publicity is still publicity. You write about them and THEY WILL STILL be popular. Obviously, if the rest of the world (that mattered) thought Charice & Arnel were copycats, why would they bother even writing songs for them, giving them world-renowned venues to play in, and endorse highly valued products. YOU ARE SOOOO STUPID. I swear, it’s people like you that make death sound more pleasurable. Thank GOD you won’t exist forever. I could care less whether the Philippines is proud of Charice or Arnel. In fact, I think they should separate themselves from those talent agencies there and focus on their REAL career. Yes, I said REAL. Just as real as your negative criticism for these artists. Why are you crab Filipinos (critics) so stubborn? Is it so hard to acknowledge their accomplishments? You can’t merely just brush off the fact that they are being recognized in the international showbiz. The fact that a young girl was invited to shows ALL OVER THE WORLD (Italy, England, Brazil, USA, Korea, etc) isn’t something that any Filipino aspiring artist can do. Copycats or not, they are still doing what they love. They aren’t doing anybody harm. Why do you think you have the right to trash them like they did something bad to you. Nobody’s worshipping them. Nobody’s killing themselves over them. Nobody’s making you listen to their music. Yet, you still think you have the right to hurt them by posting these heinous blogs about them. What do you want them to do?! When they get interviewed or discovered, you want them to say, “no, I can’t be famous. I only do cover songs” It’s THIS kind of backwards thinking that just sounds so ridiculous. Take for instance, famous athletes. They ASPIRE to be just like those legends. They WANT to be compared to them. Aspiring actors, they WANT to be compared to legendary actors. Aspiring singers, they TRY to sing like their favorite idols. Just Youtube a cover song, and you tell me how many videos you find that are deemed “original” to you and how many videos are, in your words, plain “copycats”. I am willing to bet that there are more impersonators than originators. You know, YOU are a copycat yourself. I’m guessing you jumped on the Freddie Aguilar bandwagon. Just because he stated that he didn’t acknowledge the accomplishments of Charice & Arnel. Doesn’t that make YOU a copycat?

    • Pekeng Freddie
The more you write here, the more you reveal that you are just a bandwagon Filipino supporter of Arnel and Charice. You only probably support the two because they are Filipinos and getting some very limited support from Americans/Canadians. Admit it, if Charice was Thai, you wouldn’t come here to defend her. What a sad case of a Filipino with colonial mentality.

What do you care about what other Filipinos think about the pathetic copycats like Charice and Arnel? It’s none of your business to police what they think and how they support musicians. You can’t handle that other Filipinos can think for themselves and analyze the quality of Filipino musicians.

IDK about Luke’s nationality and ethnicity, but I’m a Filipino. A Filipino with ability to think critically unlike you. I’ve never denied it, and it’s pretty obvious if you read my other blog entries.

Go ahead defend Charice and Arnel. Charice will need all the Filipino-Americans to support her when her album fails. Arnel and Journey are already doing State Fairs (translation: perya!), and they need the support of superficial Filipino bandwagon fans to milk for more $$$.

Notice that only Pacquiao was able to make a guest appearance at late night shows. Arnel and Charice can only appear at morning and noon time shows. That shows you the place they occupy in the entertainment industry in the US. That’s right, they are barrel scrapers.

      • HAHAHAHA! Wow, you really are an idiot. You have NO valid points whatsoever. Sometimes, I think you repeat words I say. Aside from that, your little buddy LUKE, DID mention the WonderGirls (first sentence). Also, if you believe that Arnel & Charice are barrel scrapers bec. all they appear on is daytime television shows, then I guess most known N.A. television shows like Oprah & Ellen are nothing to Americans right? Since it IS on daytime television. I guess Oprah & Ellen aren’t that influential or important as Jay Leno, David Letterman, or Jimmy Kimmel. One thing about that, he was on the Jimmy Kimmel Show! That’s not an accomplishment. That idiot barely got his own show a couple years back. Letterman, Leno, & O’Brien are the big ones. Compared to Oprah, Kimmel is NOTHING. Just look at statistics; the viewership of Oprah’s DAYTIME show & Kimmel’s latenight show. YOU ARE BLIND! I don’t watch Oprah, but as an American, I know she’s one of the most influential people on television. She didn’t get those billions by inviting second-rate guests to her show. You know, you don’t have to be a Charice fan or an Arnel fan. It doesn’t matter, but the least you can do is give them the respect & credit they deserve. They didn’t ask for this. They didn’t ask to become famous. They didn’t ask to be ridiculed or criticized. Why do you think you have the right to do that? Just because you speak out, doesn’t mean you’re a Filipino who can “think for themself” (your words). Just because people defend Charice doesn’t mean they are all jumping on the so-called Filipino bandwagon. So what if her fans are mainly Filipino? If you haven’t noticed, she hasn’t exactly released her WB/143/Reprise album yet. Yeah, her first 2 albums are covers, but who’s to blame? Star Records. Charice didn’t say, “hey, lets do all cover songs & I’ll try to mimic all the artists that sing those songs”. Star Records decided to give her a contract. Star Records decided to choose those songs for her to sings. Star Records wanted to make BANK on her exposure from the US. Why do you think they had her record those songs she became known for? If you haven’t noticed, a good part of Filipino artists have released and recorded several cover songs in their career. Why aren’t you harassing them? Why aren’t you b*tching about how they are copycats? Just because Charice & Arnel are getting some sort of exposure in the US, you think you can just single them out? Like I said before, I don’t care if you hate them or despise the fact that people like them, but to downright write blogs about them like they are “public enemy no. 1”, that’s just shameful. They didn’t do anything to you. How can you have so much hatred for people you don’t even know when there are criminals, murderers, thieves, terrorists, out there that deserve this kind of treatment that you’re giving to Charice & Arnel. Why don’t you blog about those terrorists in the Philippines? Why don’t you blog about corrupt politicians? Why bother blogging about people like Charice & Arnel? They are trying to live their lives & dreams. Why’s that so wrong? If they “fail” in the end (in your eyes), well, it’s life. At least they had a chance to live their dreams. Excuse me for sounding dramatic/cheesy, but I’m just trying to get my point across. My point, you’re being a cyber-bully. That’s pathetic. Why not put this blog to good use? Blog about your concerns. If you really ARE a Filipino who can “think for themself”, then write about something productive/positive. Don’t bash innocent people. That’s just downright low.

        • Pekeng Freddie, you don’t want me to bash “innocent” people, yet you bash me and others here. Practice what you preach first.
          – No excuses for Charice’s two albums. I don’t lower my standard just because some musicians are “only” known in the Philippine market. Crap is crap no matter where it’s located.
          – I’m putting my blog to “good” use by being honest to myself and the few readers who happened to drop by. I don’t sugarcoat things.
          – Oprah, Kimmel, and Elen have different demos that watch them. The first attract millions of housewives, but you can’t discount late night shows. They get the latest entertainers promoting their latest movies and music.
          – Here’s an idea: make a blog about the Filipino musicians you give a damn about. That won’t stop mainstream America to see them as nobodies. Arnel and Journey will still be has beens and Charice won’t be hip enough (her US album will not take off) to have a decent career.

      • singers need to rest early. You are just jealous because you cant sing like them 🙂

  11. Charice is mimicking CELINE DION??

This is Charice and Celine’s Duet..

    bingi k b??? =))

your credibility dropped just because of this video =))

    mimicking pla ha

    • Tell me who gets credit whenever a Celine Dion song is performed? It’s obviously not Charice…..

      • Why… do you think it will be CREDIT to you …. let me hear your voice first? And let all the people or around the world comment to your voice? yakkkkkk

I want you to have your own album… lets see who will buy heheheheheh but the question is who will promotes you heheheheeh… just my opinion

y do you have your own original song… i think you would not be on the billboard chart… SYUNGA ka inchingera..

I am pity wth you my dear eat your words….

(CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE: I appreciate the comments, but try to combine your points on a single post. I’ve combined four post of yours into one without altering the comments themselves. )

        • Do I need to be Michelin rated chef to know what good food is? Do I need to be a champion race car driver to know what a fast car is? Do you see how flawed your point is?

  12. EDIT—I have to give credit to this blog entry named “Filipinos Spit On Themselves By Supporting Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco”.

check the site and read jstuff29’s recent replies to me… Before he told me that he will download Charice’s new album illegally if the album is good… as we talk, he noted most of what I said… and Recently, He said he might actually buy Charice’s upcoming album depending if the album is good.. w/c is a good sign as he said before that if the album is good, he would just download it illegally :p

sorry to say but your argument is very weak… against the arguments I posted in his blogsite… 😛

and btw… Charice is releasing her new album… so your mimicry argument on her is void and null :p

    sorry you lose :p

    • Whatever it is you are arguing there with jstuff, it has nothing to do with what I write here. I’m just giving the blog writer credit for giving me an idea what to write about. Read what I wrote above, I took a different approach when discussing Charice and Arnel.

  13. Wondergirls got Jonas Brothers… yey

    Charice got Oprah though…

yup Charice’s Note to God didnt get radio time because her label – Warner Brothers didnt send a copy to the radio stations in the US… It doesnt even have a music video… Why? because the song is not really her single…

btw, David Archuleta feat Charice – Have yourself a merry little christmas was a hit in the US and Philippine radio stations and in the billboard charts FYI…

Pyramid is the real single in Charice’s upcoming album…

Charice is just beginning her career… Charice dueting w/ Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion are just little stepping stones to success.. w/c means there are bigger things that will happen.. Technically, her career will only start in the US once her album is released… w/c will be later this year…

“A musician having no identity and originality is quite unacceptable.”

Charice is already known by her first name…

once her album (full of original songs) is released… your “A musician having no identity and originality is quite unacceptable.” argument will become void and null too…

    sorry you lose x2 :p

    • We’ll see. Many people will not be impressed by Charice.

      • “Many people will not be impressed by Charice”

That’s such a mind-blowing thought! REALLY???, you think??? OMG!!! I just soiled my undies with that statement of yours! I just can’t wrap my mind around this…please someone call 911! I’m fainting!

        • This is why people should take their medication on time.

  14. Here is an american guy singing “Hanggang” He learned the song because he is a big fan of Charice…

(he is also learning how to speak Filipino as a result)

Here is a korean boy singing our PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM because of Charice

There are other videos of Charice Fans across the world that are influenced with Filipino Music because of Charice…

wow Charice influenced them by just covering those songs… FYI.. the songs are in TAGALOG… an alien language to them… what more if Charice will start to sing her new original songs…

anyway.. we’re not forcing you to like Charice… we’re just defending her… so you go ahead and dance your “Nobody”

btw, note to god is not a single… it was not played in the radio stations because her label didnt send a copy… + there was no music video… and btw, jojo’s note to god is not even that popular… she never performed it on stage… note to god stayed on the billboard charts for 2 weeks w/ just one noon time promotion (Oprah) of course not a lot of people was able to watch the show as most of them are in work and school…

and i just noticed you are very dogmatic… no if and no buts haha your comments are very bitter… i bet you wouldnt accept this because like i said you’re dogmatic… dogmatic blogsites = FAIL.. FYI.. your top post is about Charice…

even if you create a blog about yourself… I bet your post about charice will always be the top post… w/c makes you a failure as a blogger…

I just noticed bloggers are using Charice to gain publicity… how lame…

a dogmatic person will always remain in the first stage of critical thinking… =))

    • That has no significance to what I wrote earlier. Why does it matter if random people uploaded those videos?

  15. Charice lovers again tend to bash the people that criticize her. Why is that? I don’t know, but it sure does get old fast!!

Wonder Girld, which I did mention, did not have to get as much exposure as a cover (copycat) artist because they were good enough that people just copied them all over the world. As for Charice’s talk show exposures, well people didn’t even know she was going to be on there until after the people posted them on youtube!! Charice needed to get more exposure because she tried to prove herself. It failed! No one of importance really took notice of her. Only Oprah and Ellen who used her as a circus sideshow put her on because the American public gets a kick out of watching freak show like her. Do you really think they put it on because they thought she had talent?! They put her on because they found her amusing and that’s all. David Fosters tour concert was also another circus sideshow tour. He included second rate artist in his tour that can no longer sell any records in the US. Oops let me correct myself, ‘sell records to the mainstream in the US’. As we all know those artist he had on the show caters to geriatric audiences!!

Even if her albums comes out, I doubt very much it is going to be anything original. David Foster probably had written all the songs for her because she can’t write or read music. Also, her songs are going to be the same old boring oldies ballad style music where she yells every note to the top of her lungs! I do believe she can’t sing any other way. There’s another point why you can’t call her original. She will alway cater to a much older generation. I ask all my American or American/Filipinos if they know who she is and a majority don’t even acknowledge her existence! That’s what I call, no success!

Freddie: You say they didn’t ask to be famous!! That’s a good laugh cause that is the only reason why Charice or Arnel or any artist would become a singing hit. They want to be famous and get money and be popular. Wake up!! If you are going to be in the public light, then they should be ready for public scrutiny!

Why do we care about these copycats? Well, I just have to speak for myself on this on. Charice and Arnel are the only ones on this topic. If there are other Copycats out there, then I will criticize them too. I care very much because Filipinos are only known for doing covers and are made fun of because of this. As a society, we just blend in or try to rake in from other people’s success. I don’t want the Filipinos in the US to be know like that! I want to be proud of who we are and not who or what we can copy. It’s degrading and should not be tolerated in anyway. You guys may call it success, I call it an embarrassment! Put your heads up high and be original in what ever you do! I doubt that you Charice lovers would ever understand that. You people just satisfied by scraps when Filipinos have a greater potential.
Be proud, be Filipino and be original!!

    • Charice is just about to begin her career in the US… She’s not even that successful yet… She is about to release her original songs later this year… even if you’re saying that Charice is a copycat it will not even matter because all of us know that she doesnt have her own songs yet… (her 2 phil albums are for abscbn’s purpose of making money) once her album is released… she will be singing her original songs… BTW, She also helped in writing the songs… like the rap parts of “Reset” and “Thank You” Both songs will contain tagalog lyrics written by Charice…

she is only 17 years old… She’s a minor… She was discovered when she was 15…. what do you want to expect? She’s suffering from poverty before she was discovered… she cant even buy a computer… and the fact she was still in highschool when she got discovered… she belongs to the top of the class according to an interview by probe… at the age of 7, she is the one who supports her family since her mother doesnt have a job… and she doesnt have a father… You think you can criticize just like that? yes she maybe using other people’s songs… because she is just a KID! She doesnt even have time to write songs as she is busy in studying and joining singing contests before she got discovered… Charice doesnt even have time to play! Taylor Swift has been writing songs… yeah… and she is a perfect example of originality and success… but before becoming an artist… did she suffer from poverty? did her father left them? did she joined singing contests to support her family’s everyday needs? so she could study? so she could eat? so she could buy her family’s clothes?? no… she had 1000% better opportunities than Charice…

but yeah finally here comes an opportunity for Charice… She can sing really really well… but what do you do? you tell her that she is just a copycat? especially now that she is about release her album later this year and become original… but you want to take away that opportunity of her to become original??? wazzup w/ that???

btw, Charice was able to write a song called “Amazing” its a bit catchy.. Kris Aquino liked it… it was produced in Sweden.. I love those people from sweden as they liked Charice’s song and they helped her in producing the song that she wrote… unlike in the Philippines where people like you will do anything to pull her down…

about the talk shows… those are just stepping stones… I agree its not a big deal…

If you want to criticize Charice, know the facts first! She’s not even that famous in the US yet! and fyi… it was the koreans and the americans who supported Charice first… The filipinos didnt support Charice because she didnt had the looks, too young and can never become a sex symbol… yes sex symbol… f*** that!

once her album is released… she’s not a copycat anymore :p

and why would we care about people like Luke? because he is filipino.. and I cant understand why he would think that Charice singing other people’s music is a very big deal to him.. especially when her career in the US has not even started yet… she could cover songs as long as she wants because her album is not yet released!

dont you know that most of the famous musicians started by covering songs of other artists too? like mariah? michael jackson? celine? kelly clarkson? carrie underwood? beyonce?

so Filipinos should be something like this?

whats the first song you sang? the first song I have ever written… WTF?

you want Filipinos to stop supporting Charice? just like when she lose in a talent search where the winner cant even sing that good nowadays? and just let the other nationalities to support our fellow Filipino just like before when she got discovered in Korea’s starking? wazzup w/ that?

      • Kate, try to reply when you’re not hyperventilating. It would benefit you and readers of your comments.

Jojo, Bow Wow, and Little Romeo were young. They had their own songs, music videos, and they didn’t mimic any musician.

        • FYI jojo, bow wow and lil romeo were not suffering from poverty

        • I didn’t mention that they were suffering from poverty.

  16. For Kate: blah blah blah blah blah blah, you got nothing to say I haven’t heard before!! All the things that you had mentioned still does not prove Charice is a successful original talented music artist. Nor does attacking me will bring favor to your argument.

You hit it on the nose when you said she isn’t famous in the US!! I should know cause I live here. The fact will remains that Charice will never make it the the mainstream US radios singing the same type of songs. She had repeated exposures and nothing has come from it! She will never grow, Figuratively and Literally!! She doesn’t have a range of singing styles to appreciate, which makes her super boring to listen to!! She can’t speak english and the American public will just not relate to her nor understand what the fuck she is saying.

Her poor sob story is OLD!! Who cares what struggles she came from?!! Her albums will not sell despite her poor sob story!! Her damn story is only used to gain sympathy for her failed cause!! People here can see through that crap! People here says “isn’t like 80% of the country like that?!” This response will gain her no sympathy with people around here.

Also, why does she have to be like an American Idol who does covers. Wouldn’t that make her another example of being a copycat of American Idol singers?!! hmmm I think so!!
Oh and I doubt very much that Mariah, Jackson and Beyonce ever made covers. They would be very offended if they found out someone said they ever did that!! Beyonce was even writing original music when she was 14 or something like that. Age had nothing to do with it. It all has to do with TALENT. Charice has one good talent. She knows how to yell!! Yelling does not equal to great singing in this country.

Oh and her song from Sweden, where nobody here has ever heard of is another JOKE!! She will try to continue to push out her so-called original songs (where she didn’t even write the music for) and no one will listen to it. No young popular music producer will even touch her song, let alone put it on the radio!! Why do you think it was only released in Sweden and not the US?????
The answer to that is because it was not good enough!!

To prove Charice is a success in any term, she would have to be an award winning original music artist in the US (The Grammy’s or American Music Awards). I doubt very much she will win either. She would be singed to a REAL record label. She would have to have songs played on US radios until all Americans are tired of hearing her songs. She would have to sell at least one million records or downloads. She would also have to get rid of her accent and speak eloquently like Lea Salonga. Then and only then can she claim to be a popular international singer!! In the mean time, she should stay were she belongs, singing her tired old people music to Philippine variety shows. Oh wait, I don’t think many people there support her either!! Oh well!!

Support a true Filipino to be proud of: Manny Pacquiao!!! A Filipino man who makes me proud to say I am a of Filipino descent!!!

I do hope Charice Pempengco reads this!!!

  17. Speaking of SCRAPS, Luke, I highly doubt you live in the US because you talk like a FOB. No offense to the Filipinos out there, but you talk and act like some arrogant Filipino who lives in the Philippines. Trying to act like some “foreigner”. Not only is your grammar bad, but you try wayyy too hard. Regardless of where you live, I could care less. The US, the Philippines, China for all I care, you’re still a SCRAP, a CRAB, a JEALOUS PIECE OF SHIT. I didn’t even bother reading the entire comment you made bec. you’re just downright ridiculous. You don’t have to support Charice. She doesn’t need people like you.

To Kate, don’t waste your time with cardcrusher’s little bitch, “LUKE”. He’s just like all the stubborn crabs. No matter how valid your points are, they’ll always resort to the same old, “I don’t care” bullshit. They are persistent little buggers. Just forget them. Whether Charice succeeds fully in the US & the Western World, she has definitely achieved a lot. Arnel & Charice have put Filipinos on the map, along with Lea Salonga, etc. Even if a portion of their own kind won’t support them, there are thousands more who will keep backing them up and acknowledging the talent these two have shown a good portion of this world.

Back to you “Luke”: Continue your bitching, your nagging, your stubborn ways buddy. It’s gonna get you nowhere. It hasn’t gotten you anywhere for the past, who knows how long you’ve been dissing Charice. While you nag about her, she keeps gaining more and more fans EVERYDAY. I guess the majority of this world sees something that you don’t. Sucks for you, man. YOU’RE ALWAYS GONNA BE THE MINORITY! LMFAO!!!!

“I do hope “Luke” reads this!!!” -this quote was inspired by an idiot

    • Fake Freddie Aguilar, you are wrong in your assumptions of Luke. Look at how he writes and compare it to your posts, I’m afraid you are the one that comes off as arrogant, uneducated, and having a poor command of logic not to mention grammar.

Tell me fake Freddie, what good has come out of the support of Filipinos all over the world? The support can make Wowowee or Eat Bulaga tours profitable, but what else? You keep criticizing the Filipino critics of Charice that you miss out the success of Charice depends on a bigger set of demographic(s). Do you think that they’ll buy the tired repetitive crap she puts out? Good luck and good riddance to Charice, her career, and her annoying fans.

  18. “HOW DARE YOU HATE CHARICE AND ARNEL AFTER ALL THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH!!! They’re just trying to make a living and make the best out of their opportunities but all you people want is MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE!!! Stop disgracing/insulting/hating them and their fans, PLLLEEEEAASSSEEEE” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc

    XD

Seriously, excellent article, I enjoyed it very much 🙂

    • LOL. I appreciate it.

Thanks for the link. It somehow reminds me of Kate! I’m kidding! 😉

    • Thanks someone!! That video reminds me of all the whinny supporters of Charice and Arnel!!

  19. You’re a retard cardcrusher. Why do you keep copying the things I say? I guess YOU truly are the copycat. As for that supporting Wowowee & Eat Bulaga bullshit, WRONG! I don’t support shit like that. People watch it and I could care less, but you don’t see me writing blogs about them. You’re pathetic. Just because people support Charice doesn’t mean they support everything Filipino. Dumbass. That just goes to show how ignorant YOU are. Her fans & supporters may be annoying, but at least they make reasonable arguments. YOU pathetic excuse of a person, see it fit to bash on artists like Charice & Arnel only because they’re starting to gain international. Call it what you want. You can say that they haven’t achieved much; blah blah blah. Think again. While they’re making millions, gaining fans, you’re sitting in front of your computer REPLYING TO YOUR HATEEE MAIILLL. LMAO!!! My advice to you, quit being bitter. If you hate Charice & Arnel, just shut your mouth. Nobody’s making you listen to them. Nobody’s making you watch them. Nobody cares what you have to say. I bet you’re gonna say “Well, if you don’t care, then why are you on my page?” Here’s my answer. I’M PUTTING YOU IN YOUR PLACE! LOL. Little Filipino crabs need to know their place. Do me a favor, don’t reply back to anybody here…or else I’ll be back EVERYTIME just to hate on YOU. I’m just returning the favor for Charice & Arnel. A world with one less crab is a good one.

    • You’re one insane fool! I’m going to let you comment here unedited for the last time unless you can stop flaming. Reword your points and stop bashing me and others here. Your comments let the whole world know how out of touch some Filipino fans of Charice and Arnel can be. You’re delusional if you think you’re me putting me in my place. How about addressing the points above? That’s right, you can’t defend those two copycats from my criticisms.

-When did I accuse you of watching Wowowee and Eat Bulaga? Somebody here needs better reading comprehension.
      – A reasonable argument from Charice fans is unheard of. It may exist, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
      – Arnel and Charice are artists? I didn’t know karaoke enthusiasts can now be labeled as artists.
      – Why should I shut my mouth when inarticulate fools like you gets to call people crabs? I have even more reasons to air out my views when ignorance and lack of rational thinking prevails.
      – Once again, tell me what has come out of the Filipino support?
-Stop dodging the points I raised earlier.

  20. cardcrusher, it was hilarious that fake freddie didn’t even read my comments to kate. It surely shows how ignorant this person is. This person probably need english comprehension tutoring!! All he does if bash all the people that does not like Charice or Arnel. Why? He doesn’t have anything to back-up either of these so called singers.

Also, to call me a crab is just too funny! If I was a crab then I would also criticize Manny Pacquiao or any other Filipino celebrities out there all the time. But, I don’t!! I appreciate Filipinos with real talents and make me proud to be a Filipino.

To Fake Freddie: Give me an email address and I will send you a picture of a local news paper here in New Jersey with the current date. That surely would prove where I am from!!

    • Yup, Fake Freddie just slings mud hoping some of it will stick. He’s going to have to clean up his act or get his own blog.

      • @Luke, stop being “cardcrusher’s” BITCH. It’s pathetic.

        • What’s the matter? You can’t stand people with views that contradict yours? So you react by insulting them? You have a way of demonstrating you maturity!

  21. Cardcrusher is a terrorist like me. We must understand her? BTW, is she a slut or a boar? anyway, she must be an “it”. LOL!!! Bring it on, OSAMITA!!! (daughter of Osama, ROTFL)

    • Speak for yourself. Resorting to ad hominem so soon? Your comment reveals more about yourself than your baseless assumptions about me.

  22. The very reason Charice got international attention is because she is able to belt out songs of well-known divas—an astounding feat for a girl her age. Naturally, she was made to sing such songs again and again. That was what the fuss was about. I am no avid follower but I have listened to the girl sing and of course she’s good. I’ve heard that she’s got some material written for her now, so that’s the issue about lack of originality settled. Her identity? The little girl with the big voice. Not exactly new, but works well for her.

It is but normal for many Filipinos to feel such pride when one of their own is able to succeed, in any field, and gain popularity outside of the country. Maybe it’s being shallow for others, and being nationalistic for some. If Charice were Malaysian or Indonesian, and I happened to watch her in Star King (which I love) I’m sure I would still be blown away and I would still like her. The fact that she’s Pinay magnifies that liking. Oh same reason why many love Batista, or Nicole, or those others with Filipino blood. Why that kind of support is viewed as such a bad thing, I may never comprehend.

Let’s love talent. Appreciate it. Support is if we like. Honestly, so much energy is wasted on hating and bashing off.

    Cheers!

    • Kat, good point about others making her sing those songs over and over. That’s why a good manager and handlers are needed to advocate for the interest of the entertainer.

  23. you exactly have my sentiments cardcrusher, charice is just a COPYCAT. she’s just one of the many pinoy singers who can belt out sounding like a karaoke…nothing special about her. no, she won’t make it big in the US, coz if she will, she would have made it already with her first single release, NTG. and to those who said that NTG was #44 at billboard, that should be expected since she promoted it at oprah’s show, where it averages 2-3 million viewers. it only charted for one week, as far as i know, the single sold less than 100k units. oprah and david foster just took her under their wings because of her sob story. she’s just all hype, mayabang pa, using big names like oprah and even michael jackson.

    • Gerrime: I’m glad you mentioned the name michael jackson! It was so obvious that Charice was lying about being invited to his next tour concert! Otherwise, she would or her agents would have mentioned it to the public months before he died and months before the concert would have started. Also, at the time of michael jackson passing, he was already preparing for the concert. Wouldn’t Charice already be with him preparing too if she was going to be such a big part of it?! No, she was at her home in the Philippines, shocked like everyone else that michael jackson had died!! You are completely correct to say she is a copycat and the biggest copycat the Philippines has ever seen! Even her dance moves are copied from michael jackson!! Where is the originality in that?! I certainly would not support a person that amplifies Filipinos as monkey copying singers!! There is no filipino pride in that!!!

      • That episode about MJ and Charice left a bad taste in my mouth. The man just died and all (inconsiderate) Filipinos wrote and talked about the lost opportunity for Charice to not be part of MJ’s tour. I’m glad that there are those in the media who called out BS on that.

I’m not even going to touch the issue of whether Charice was really supposed to be part of the concert tour.

    • @gerrime, you exude the exact traits of a jealous Filipino crab. Why do we call you people crabs? Because your people are known for their “crab mentality”. They can’t stand to see their own kind becoming successful. Look at those shows in the Philippines; those artists. When they perform on those variety shows, just how much “love” do they get from the crowd? Almost slim to none. The fact is, since Charice came from a rags to riches background, with so many odds against her, you see it fit to bash her. You want to seem superior. Doesn’t matter what you think about the Charice/MJ appearance. The majority already know she was supposed to appear on MJ’s last concert @ O2. All the nonsense you crabs say are nothing that sane people haven’t heard before. “She’s a copycat” or “She’s a liar” or “She’ll never make it.” BLAH BLAH BLAHHHH. Lame excuses. That’s all you crabs have to say. It’s been almost 3 years and that’s all you have come up with. All that time, Charice has been winning awards, appearing in numerous prestigious guestings, working on her debut album, and receiving non-stop praise from so many notable people. From the looks of it, I’d have to say: CHARICE- 30+ , FILIPINO CRABS- 0.

      • Impostor
Stop attacking the person making the criticism. Refute their points instead. Take that as mild warning

It’s been 3 years and her third album has been delayed once again. What award has Charice won outside of those given in the Philippines or given by Filipinos abroad?

    • Gerrime, thanks for sharing the fact that NTG was only at Billboard for only a week. I was under the impression that it charted longer.

  24. in my own opinion, arnel pineda and charice are not artists, they should be labeled as entertainers.

    • Kiko, good point. They are entertainers. In Arnel’s case, he is a very good entertainer and mimic. I saw the series of videos that led to him getting noticed. This person managed to upload them all at YOutube after some were taken down. http://www.youtube.com/user/edakdak

  25. CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE Comment deleted due to excess verbal attacks and staying well off topic. Next time, reword you points and keep the personal attacks to a minimum.

In addition, Charice has no buzz in mainstream America right now. How can she be getting more well known?

  26. ‘They come off as Asians who just desperately try to be EXACTLY LIKE Whitney Houston, Celine Dion,Steve Perry, and etc.”

This is a horrible misinformation. It’s likely that Boa, Rain and WG fit that description — trying to be Asian sellouts just to penetrate the good old USA, especially WG,. I could give Rain and Boa credits for their real talents but WG? They just like a more sophisticated version of the Philippines’ Sex Bomb, G-Girls, or Viva Hot Babes. All looks, no talent in the singing department.

First, Arnel and Charice weren’t even thinking to breakthrough into the US market(they’re aim was to be recognized in the Philippines – unfortunately, although they have talent, the local media prefer to just give the opportunity to the ‘models’ who can’t even sing a note) unlike Asians like Rain/Bi, Boa, or the Wonder Girls, Utada Hikaru. They got the attention of prominent US music personalities which was never given to them in the Philippines. I’m sure you know this people have been discovered through Youtube. The sad thing is, along with this crab mentality, Filipinos prefer looks over talent that’s why such talented people like Charice and Arnel would only be noticed by foreigners who look for real talents and not looks.

James of Moymoy Palaboy even half joked about this when he mentioned that he auditioned for Star in a Million “Dapat guwapo ka pala para makasali”.

Both Arnel and Charice do not pass the media standards of beauty – Caucasian or mestiza or Chinita- looking. These two, looks to ‘native’ to be considered seriously in the entertainment industry. Only people with such look can only make it to the comedy department

By the way, Arnel wasn’t only hired to mimic Steve Perry. he was hired because he can do vocals pretty well. In an interview with Cain, he mentioned that prior to Pineda, they were considering two guys(American) from Journey cover bands who sounds almost exactly like Perry and he even mentioned these guys look too close too Perry. But how come they picked Arnel? The dude can sing anything. In fact, it wasn’t Zoo’s performance of Faithfully that caught Schon’s attention but it was when Arnel was singing Search is Over by Survivor.

While Whites, Latinos, and Europeans are warming up to the Filipino vocalist of Journey; Here they are bashing their own. What a shame.

This is hypocrisy and crab mentality or maybe just someone trying too hard to form an unpopular commentary just to sound nationalistic or cool. What a myopic sense of nationalism. If you are really into this topic, how come you did not mention the artists that popularized the lets-revive-syndrome that plagued the local music industry – Nina and MYMP? What about the artists in the 90’s who did nothing but translate foreign songs to Tagalog? Remember Lumayo Ka Man and Ikaw Pa Rin? iIbet most Filipino don’t even know that the original version of these songs are Japanese.

Why not hit too, the local stations that does nothign but remake Korean or Taiwanese dramas rather than writing their own script?

It’s too early too lash on Arnel and Charice. It’s like judging a novel without even reading it. They are new to the international music scene. If I were to critize about singing/remaking foreign songs, I’d heavily criticize Nina and MYMP, and occassionaly, Richard Poon. These artists became famous in the Philippines because of their renditions. Particularly Nina and MYMP. Hey, Nina’s best selling album was ever her ‘cover album’ her album full of cover songs from American Artists.

By the way, according to news, Schon has been encouraging Arnel to get used to life in the US and he is inviting him to write songs with the band. I might you cannot just criticize Arnel for singing Journey songs and singing it with the Journey trademark — it is his job and it seems it’s what the crowd wanted. On the other hand, have you heard how he sang their new materials? He’s putting his own style and not just mimicking Perry’s vocals.

    • Gigi

How can Boa, Rain, or WG be sellouts? They have songs of their own in their own language. In addition, Boa and Rain have released Japanese albums. How can they be sellouts? If I have to label some as sellouts, it would be Arnel and Charice. Asian born and raised people singing songs in English is so “Asian” indeed. I understand that you disagree if you label musicians who sing in Japanese and Korean as sellouts. So Orwellian….

Don’t you mean Arnel has the necessary vocals to mimic Steve Perry very well? 😉

I’m not criticizing MYMP, Nina, and Philippine entertainment outlets because they are not on my sights yet. They’ll get their opportunity to be criticized sooner or later

It’s not too early to criticize them. People are just pointing shortcomings as they come along, but I’m sure those who criticized here would change their mind if those issues are corrected. If Arnel gets to contribute to making the new Journey album, good for him. Not only does that mean more money for him, it also gives him an artistic stake at the band. .

      • Rain/Boa/WG already have an established fanbase in East Asia, what’s the point of vainly trying to make it to the US where their styles are considered outdated (esp the Wondergirls)? Just to say “we made it to the US”. Even Asian Americans bother with them.

As for Charice and Arnel, they accidentally made it internationally. They’re intentions were to make it locally. But I guess they’re talented for the local entertainment that prioritize looks over talents.

“Asian born and raised people singing songs in English is so “Asian” indeed.”

Define Asian! Chinese? Japanese? Korean? This is the problem, both Westerners and Asian themselves equate Asianness to East Asian culture. That’s is a myopic view of Asian. What about Malaysians and Singaporeans who ALONG with their native languages sing in English? What about the Indians who take importance of English? Like it or not, English and Americanisms and Hispanicisms are part of the FILIPINO Identity. Heck, most Filipinos even have Western names — Pineda is Spanish/Catalan not ‘native’ Filipino so are surnames like Cruz, Enriquez, Aguilar… ‘Pempengco’ is most likely of Chinese origin. But then again, define ‘Asian’. Being Asian has nothing to do culturally but geography. Macanese people are considered Asians(culturally) despite heavy European(Portugese) influence.

“Don’t you mean Arnel has the necessary vocals to mimic Steve Perry very well?”

I wonder if ever you have listened to the ORIGINAL material in Journey’s latest album? Journey isn’t Steve Perry alone. In fact, Journey is still capable to sound like the 70’s and 80’s Journey with or without Arnel because also Neal Schon and Jon Cain are also responsible for the Journey sounds just as much as Steve Perry. When Arnel sang Foolish Heart as requested by one from the audience, inI think Cebu, he did not even sound like Steve Perry at all in style and voice. In short, It’s Arnel Pineda’s ability to do the Journey sound…not the “Steve Perry” sound.

Yes, it IS early to criticize of Arnel and Charice. The former especially. If you have heard the NEW materials in Revelation, the words Steve Perry would not come in mind as he puts in his OWN style. In the re-records, of course, he has to maintain the ‘legacy’ sound of the band. But don’t you worry, his accent puts the quirks. Another reason why it is early to lash out on him: the songs in the album was written PRIOR to his joining AND according to Neal Schon, he’s asking Arnel to contribute to song writing and what he’s saying is that Arnel is great with lyrics, melodies, and concepts.

As for Charice, isn’t it that her albums were released by Star Records? I guess the blame on her ‘revival songs’ should but more aptly put to the album producer and record company than herself? It’s Star Records that have hindered her from developing her own identity that’s why IMO, it’s better for her to be with David Foster than local producers. If you look at it, it is these very people who discarded her because, she looked ‘too native’ and when she got recognized by foreigners, they go running after her. She is probably given more attention by Star Records than the winner of the Little Big Star because with her rise to popularity internationally, she’s now ‘marketable’

And not to mention, both are just at the start of their international career.

You’re easy to defend your lash outs on Arnel and Charice without trying to see the other side of the coin. That is NOT constructive criticism. It’s pre-conceived bias.

If the REAL issue here is identity and originality, I’d rather point to the local industry in general rather than Arnel and Charice. You do have a point about singing nothing but revivals that is the trend nowadays. But you’re simply barking at the wrong tree, darling. As for Arnel, he used to sing in bars/music lounge where he sings songs requested by customers. As someone being payed, it is his job to do so. But if you look at his discography(solo album and the one with Zoo), it’s mostly original materials which sadly, never got promoted to the mainstream. As for Charice, Star Records never gave justice to her talent. Rather than getting someone to write songs for her just as they did for Sarah Geronimo earlier, they opted to throw her old songs. Both Arnel and Charice are too good to make it locally. They were hardly appreciated by the entertainment media, most likely because of their non-mestiza looks. They’re better off going internationally where ethnicity, looks hardly matter if you’re really talented.

Even South American netizens are going crazy over Moymoy Palaboy whose style isn’t really original(concept borrowed from the Back Dorm Boys of China) but they’re good at it and seem to do their lip syncing better

        • Gigi

I call bullshit on accidentally making it internationally. Don’t fall for the publicity tricks of their PR people.

          Re: English
Being Asian is both a cultural and geographical matter. English is a foreign language. It is not native to any Asian country and culture. Stop being such a little brown American. Asia is a diverse place. It encompasses east, south (Indians), and even the Middle East. Even Russia has “Asian” roots.

          Re: Charice and Star Records
The burden falls on the artist to not be yanked too much in a direction he/she doesn’t want. It’s an adversarial relationship.

          Re: Steve Perry
Guess what version of Journey songs are played on the radio? It’s the ones with Steve Journey as lead vocals. That’s how important he is to the band. People associate his voice as the main vocals of Journey. When people think of Journey, they think of Steve Perry singing the hit songs of band at their height of popularity. Re-recording classic Journey songs with Arnel won’t change the fact that radio stations and people in general prefer the original. Re-recording those songs are only about $$ and to act as incentive for people to buy the new album without the familiar voice who was there when the band was at its peak.

          Re: My focus
I’ve decided to focus on Charice and Arnel because they’re on the spotlight ATM General criticisms wold come later on.

        • AMEN Gigi. These people just can’t see that. They WANT to hate on them. We know they know they’re losing the battle. They’ve become so desperate as to just completely act blind about their accomplishments. Call it what you want, mimicry, copycat, etc. Either way, THEY ARE FAMOUS! Famous in the eyes of who? PEOPLE, doesn’t matter the fanbase, at least they’re getting noticed.

        • @CaliN4shun
According to you, the end goal is fame. That is one shallow end goal. Are you implying that Charice is a not an artist, therefore, the best she can go for is fame?

Your point about fame reflects what this critic has pointed out about some Charice fans. Charice fans shoot themselves on the foot when they prioritize fame over artistic contributions.

  27. Crab mentality is composed of people bring down other ALL people of the SAME ethnicity regardless of how talented they are or not. I would not consider the people here who criticize to be someone with crab mentality. I’m pretty sure that most are happy that other Filipinos are being recognized by their own field of expertise. For instance, I am very proud for Pacquiao for winning seven titles in seven weight divisions! I am proud for Lea Salonga for being a great performer on Broadway and all the awards that she had received! I am proud for Apl.de.ap for his accomplishments in the black eyed peas and being a well-known record producer! There are also those of filipino decent actors here in the US. Does that make me a crab? I don’t think so! I think people should look up the definition of the term before using it. I don’t think anyone here, who gives constructive criticism, have crab mentality.

  28. CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE Comment deleted due to excess verbal attacks and staying well off topic. Next time, reword you points and keep the personal attacks to a minimum.

Go get your own blog where you can insult and swear at those who have opinions that you don’t like. Make a pingback or trackback to this blog as well.

  29. (CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE Comment marginally edited due to excess ad hominems. The fool actually managed to write some sentences that don’t excessively attack those he/she disagree with for a change!)

You’re pathetic. You go around commenting about Charice & Arnel’s flaws. Go do something productive. How are you helping yourself & others by putting down people who are working hard to achieve their own dreams? You think you’re so much better than them? Just because they are in the entertainment industry doesn’t give you the right to just discredit the accomplishments they’ve achieved. Regardless of how they got there, can’t you just learn to say “good job” or “congratulations”? I bet you you’re the type of person that can’t give anybody credit. No matter what they do, no matter how hard they work, it is never enough. Charice didn’t ask to be famous internationally. All she wanted was enough money to help support her family. Same goes for Arnel. Just because they became famous by singing cover songs, you think you have the right to say they have NO ORIGINALITY? Tell all the artists from the PI & the US to WAKE UP THEN. They aren’t original at all. They have all worked their way to fame by covering their idol’s songs. Why are Charice & Arnel so different? Charice is getting her own songs. No, she didn’t write them on her own. Yes, these songs were made especially for her. When people hear these songs, they will know it’s by CHARICE. What is your problem? Is it because she didn’t personally write them? Give her time. Maybe her next album will have songs written by her. Not all artists have written their own songs. In fact, most of them have their songs written by others. What I’m trying to say is, GIVE HER A BREAK. Stop being so cruel. You know the saying “put yourself in their shoes”? DO IT. Read what you have to say about them. Look at how much hurtful things you have said. The title says it all. What if someone wrote a blog about YOUR lack of identity? What if they criticized you about your craft? Left and right, they just keep dissing you as if they knew you. Look, I’m not here to make friends, to make enemies, etc. I just hope you know what you are doing. You might have freedom of speech, but you have to ask yourself “Is what I’m doing constructive?” I highly doubt that. I don’t expect you to write up a retraction or say “sorry” or even make a complete 180. You don’t have to like Charice or Arnel, but can’t you just give them some credit?? They at least deserve some respect.

    • It’s called the entertainment industry. It’s not a charity for Charice to gain sympathy from others using that sob story.

I actually give Arnel and Charice credit for their immense capability to mimic. They are so good at aping Steve Perry, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston.

I have the right and freedom to make my own opinions, and I’ve made a blog to air them. By airing the, I hope to improve the standards of some people. Just take a look at the examples I gave of people having their own songs above. If you can’t handle opinions that you don’t like, I suggest you go to countries where freedom of speech is limited by government and/or theocratic organizations.

BTW, you just revealed your ignorance once again. You assume so much that you forgot to read my other blog entries that refute your allegations against me. Here’s a tip, stop assuming so much that you end making a fool out of yourself

  30. Charice is a nobody. Her album got delayed again! By this rate, her album won’t be released until 2012, and by then, there wouldn’t be a world left as predicted by the Mayans!

Charice’s music label doesn’t give a damn about her. Hahaha. Sobrang pangit kasi siya! Akala siguro tsimay si Charice na naligaw sa opisina nila. LOL

    • Pangit Si Charice
Who knows man. At least Charice has released two albums. Do you know that Charice has released two albums full of cover songs? I’m guessing you didn’t buy a copy! 😉

      • Nobody bought her album!! That’s the funny part!!!

        • If nobody bought her album, then why is it PLATINUM in the Philippines? I swear, you idiots on this blog are so blind, it actually IS worth reading. I get a laugh out of all the nutcases who actually agree with your pathetic leader “cardcrusher”. LMAO!

        • @CaliN4shun
Admit it. You can’t tolerate views that oppose yours. You have to label those with a different view as “pathetic”, “tards”, and “desperate”. Your insults and inability to (properly) contradict the views of the critics demonstrate your (lack of) capabilities to debate the issue at hand.

    • MAY 11, 2010. Do your research TARDS.

      • LOL. What does that prove? Another delay!

  31. i’m officially no longer a charice fan. i went to her latest concert and signed up for a fan gathering. and you know what i wasn’t even able to get a pic taken with her or an autograph. the organizers said she will only take 20 out of 60 bcoz she’s all tired, thats not even a valid excuse. i wonder if this is how she treats her fans? give them false hope. i was really turned off …coz as a fan you cant help it but feel bad. sure it wouldn’t take long to have a pic with her, it makes you feel that you have to beg just for a mere pic! after buying her albums, following her on her fan sites, promoting her to your friends, and defending her to those who harshly critizes her and this is what you get. you know she hasn’t made it big yet in the US and still has a long way to go, yet she has this ‘star complex’. i hope she will change and improve herself before she start losing all her fans.

    • That is just horrible to hear! She is acting like a diva when she isn’t even a real one! I doubt she will even get to that level either! From your story, it seems now she only has 20 fans left! By May or June, she won’t have any left! She really has to get her act together and get rid of her US handlers. Also she needs to patch up her relationship with her poor old grandmother!!

      • actually there were 64 of her fans who signed up for that meet & greet event, but on the day itself just hours before the concert will start, they told us that charice’ mgt. wants only to pick 20 out of the 64 fans, who will be lucky enough to have a solo pic with her and the rest should be content with group pics. no autograph signing allowed as she will be tired by that time and as an alternative they’ll just give out pre-signed posters. but still there were others who were able to have their items signed by charice and i really find it so unfair. when i shared my comment after this event, the org. told me that i should be thankful bcoz charice was there, she showed up and it did not even cost us money. so we should be grateful???!!! it did cost us money bcoz we bought our tickets!!! and her concert is so expensive! i was really upset that night that we left early and forget all about the poster i’m supposed to claim. what’s the use i might as well throw it in the trash can for all i care. whatever happens to her career, i’m not that interested anymore because she definitely left a negative impression. she’s just a waste of time.

    • Denali
I’m sorry that you went through that. It’s quite a surprise Charice is already acting that way. If she were Britney Spears, it’s easy to dismiss such diva acts, but as you wrote, she’s just starting out. Her diva behavior will not end well, and Filipino fans have a way of carrying on with chips on their shoulders if they are slighted.

  32. Cardcrusher, what is your take on Charice’s ‘Pyramid’ song? I want to know your take on it before I give my criticism on it.

    • Luke
Sorry for the late response. Pyramid is not really catchy enough. In addition, I can sense that it’s too similar to the songs performed by Jojo only a couple of years ago. Worse, Jojo’s songs were catchier.

I haven’t been paying attention to Charice’s progress. How’s Pyramid doing? In any case, it’s about time for me to read/ watch what others are saying out there about Charice.

  33. charice is not just a copycat anymore, just right after the released of her new album shes now become generic xD

she dont really use her big throaty voice in her album bec. it sounds awful in recording.

    • Jef
Ok, Charice now has her own songs. Nonetheless, doesn’t Pyramid sounds a bit too close to what Jojo was singing a couple of years ago?

  34. Charice will always be a copycat! Pyramid isn’t even her song, which still makes her not original!! The song is crap because she is not pronouncing her words correctly!! Her look is fake too!!

@jef: when you say ‘generic’, do you mean she is performing without a label??

  35. Charice is Banig part 2

    Where is Josephine Banig now?

Nobody took notice of Arnel when he was just a local entertainer. Then journey took him and suddenly he’s da bomb!

Kudos to APL, rico blanco, eraserheads, yeng constantino and other pinoy artist who don’t have to copy foreign artists.

    • I agree. Those guys have their own identities.

  36. enough of these bullshits

the truth is, those who love and defend charice are bunch of pedos who want to fuck a little asian girl.

    • LOL I always had that strange feeling that there’s something wrong with those Charice fans. 😉

      • You lost all credibility by even jokingly responding to that disgusting comment by hikatalomato.

        • OMG
I suggest you look up sarcasm. Does Hikatalomato’s comment hit too close to home?

  37. This site is a bad joke – very bad!

    • Webscribes
Labeling my blog as “bad” doesn’t invalidate the points I’ve made. Does ignoring criticism help you sleep better at night?

  38. My gosh.. you dedicated your time in trying to ruin other people??? what kind of person are you?? what did Charice and Arnel did to you anyway? Firstly, Charice and Arnel did not beg to be discovered over the internet. Secondly, their fans uploaded their videos on Youtube and not themselves. If you hate them so much you should be aware of that. Third, they already have a considerable following in the Philippines before they received international exposure. This goes to show that people already appreciate their talent way before they got discovered. Lastly, these two homegrown Filipino talents are just like the rest of us ordinary people who have dreams and obviously have the TALENT to go with it. Who ever said that it is bad to idolize international recording artists such as Whitney Houston and Steve Perry??? We all have people to look up to who inspire us. It is this inspiration that motivate us to do well and improve our chosen craft as in the case of Charice and Arnel which is – singing/performing on stage. I don’t understand why you have to dedicate one whole page just to ruin and criticize these two talented artists.

To those who hate Charice and Arnel – why don’t you do something worthwhile.

    • Tamaha
Get a grip! When did constructive criticism and comparing the paths of non American musicians equate to “hate” and “ruining” other people?

Secondly, there’s nothing wrong in idolizing international artists. There’s just a fine line crossed when one becomes a complete copycat of said artists.

Last, why are you so against opinions that contradict your own?

  39. Charice is a young and talented singer. Young as she may be, she is obviously versatile compared to other Disney so-called recording artists in Hollywood. She can sing pop, she can rap, she can hold her own against Celine, heck she was invited by Andrea B. in Italy for his b-day bash where they sang The Prayer!

Charice will prove you crabs wrong again.

    • Tamaha
Charice might be versatile, but the song selection negates that. Tell me, who needs another Celine, Whitney, or Jojo copycat. Having original material is important

Why am I a crab? Just because I have opinions that don’t match yours?

  40. you just noticed that charice sounds like jojo because she covered the “note to God” song…so what do you want charice to sound like? you’re a moron trying to be popular by using other’s popularity.

    • Pinoyski
Go compare the previous songs by Jojo and “Pyramid”. You’ll notice the similarity.

Secondly, I”m not trying to be popular. I bet you are just butthurt because I have opinions that contradict yours.

  41. well, as for me, i appreciate real talent… a voice that captures my soul. regardless if the song has been popularized by others. that makes me a fan i guess… try listening to songs like HP’s “my backyard” maybe you’ll have a different view. just try..

    • Nicole
Fair enough. I just believe that musicians should have their own distinct identities, and having original songs is an important component of that. BTW “My Backyard” demonstrates another side of Charice where she’s not mimicking somebody else or recycling the same old song.

  42. it seems that it’s always the filipinos themselves who are the biggest critics of their kababayans, i dunno if it’s crab mentality or not, but i’ve noticed it a lot with filipinos in general. this blog is juz one of those that fall into that category. it’s so funny how people keep saying that charice is always trying to be someone else, first it was whitney and celine cos she became well known singing their songs and she happened to sing them well, and now it’s jojo cos her voice and the song pyramid itself sounds similar to what jojo used to sing. have u ever thought that charice juz happens to be a VERSATILE singer hence she can sound different in the songs that she sings? heck, she can even sound like regine velasquez and beyonce as well. try listening to her whole album first before making a comment about charice trying to be someone else, her new songs reset and in this song are completely different to other songs out there. and also, fyi the most popular music nowadays is pop and in case u havent noticed, pop is full of copy cat generic singers, and that includes popular ones like lady gaga and keisha. lady gaga copies a lot of madonna’s style and keisha sounds exactly like rihanna, in fact when i first heard her, i thought it was rihanna singing. the singers that u mentioned that are of latin american heritage, u shouldnt have bothered mentioning them bcoz latin music was popular even way back then, and new singers like ricky martin and his like are juz riding on the never ending popularity of latin music. and really, why bother comparing apl de ap to charice? charice is juz starting to become noticed whilst apl de ap is a member of an already popular band, he probably started off singing songs that charice and arnel sings i.e the ones that dont relate to filipino culture at all. and for those hk/korean/japanese pop singers? oh puhleez, the only ones who will ever take notice of them are those geeks obsessed with anime. in case u havent noticed, majority of songs that become well known are sung in english. and not only that, but that wonder girls that u hyped about, well, too bad but they didnt seem to be a hit in the US at all. in one of the blogs i checked out, some koreans were even begging them to come back to korea so they could stop humiliating themselves in the US. and since ur so obsessed with originality, why didnt u bother mentioning the fact that the wondergirls seem to have copied the supremes, even singing some of their songs? as for myself, though i dont consider myself an avid fan, but i do admire charice’s undeniable talent. and im proud and im glad that charice is starting to at least make a name for herself in the US, inspite of the fact that she is Asian. the great thing is she doesnt need to take off her clothes or shock people to get noticed at all.

    • Nando
-Being self critical is not exclusive to Filipinos. It can be found in many ethnicities throughout all continents.
      – In Charice’s case, she and her management actually backed themselves into that copycat corner by having Charice sing over a million covers of Whitney, Celine, and others. Heck, even her first single is one that is rejected by who else, but Jojo. First impression is everything!
-“why bother comparing apl de ap to charice? ” Why bother trying to use your brain?

“and for those hk/korean/japanese pop singers? oh puhleez, the only ones who will ever take notice of them are those geeks obsessed with anime. in case u havent noticed, majority of songs that become well known are sung in english. ”
That reveals your close mindedness and Anglo centric views. Open your eyes and see that there is a world beyond the Anglo-sphere. If you are of Asian descent, you are probably a banana or coconut. Brown or yellow on the outside, white on the inside.

      – There are levels of being a copycat. The worse is when a musician is like Charice who became famous for singing the songs that others have popularized. The Wonder Girls’ case is different story. They didn’t cover the Supremes. Furthermore, they have their own songs specifically made for them including “Nobody” which is reminiscent of the Supremes. Try to broaden your horizon beyond your narrow Anglo centric POV. In terms of the copycat argument, Charice comes off looking bad if compared to the Wonder Girls. For that matter, Charice comes off looking bad if compared to the successful non American musicians mentioned on my blog entry.

-BTW notice how you didn’t address the identity and originality arguments. Is it because Charice has neither of those?

      • -Being self critical is not exclusive to Filipinos.

So what do u call those those american idol contestants who became well known singing other ppl’s songs? what about Susan Boyle whose album was full of non original songs? funny enough but people didnt seem to have a problem with it, except maybe to people like u who seem to love criticizing other people’s success. tell me, are u so much better than charice for u to judge her so negatively? and btw, if you’re talking about Note to God, jojo never rejected it. she did actually sing it and included it in her album, but it was never released as a single. the song writer diane warren gave it to charice to sing in the Oprah show and hence it became well known. u can’t honestly blame charice for being given a song to sing and popularizing it? u might as well blame whitney for popularizing I Will Always Love You, since the original singer was actually Dolly Parton.

-”why bother comparing apl de ap to charice? ” Why bother trying to use your brain?

RIGHT, INSTEAD OF ANSWERING THE QUESTION, U GO FOR THE INSULT INSTEAD. U PROBABLY COULDNT THINK OF ANYTHING TO REPLY TO THAT SO U JUZ HAD TO RESORT TO CHILDISH NAME CALLING. AND YET U HAVE THE NERVE TO PUT DOWN OTHERS FOR CALLING U NAMES. IT JUZ GETS TO PROVE THAT NOT ONLY ARE U A HATER BUT UR ALSO A HYPOCRITE!

-That reveals your close mindedness and Anglo centric views. Open your eyes and see that there is a world beyond the Anglo-sphere. If you are of Asian descent, you are probably a banana or coconut. Brown or yellow on the outside, white on the inside.

oh wow, thats so funny. now ur calling me a self hater. excuse me but u dont even know me well enough to make those kinds of assumptions. maybe ur the self hater here, bcoz instead of supporting a fellow filipino, ur juz hating on them instead bcoz they dont seem authentic enough. so she has to sing in filipino for u to view her as being original? as for those korean/asian pop group/singers, if they weren’t so keen in trying to enter the US music industry and trying to break through, then i would totally understand ur argument. but groups like the wonder girls themselves know how important and how much more famous they would be if they did break into the american music mainstream. i’m not being anglo centric or close minded, it’s juz the reality of it. the US music industry is where it’s at, juz like in the movie industry, once u break into the hollywood scene and start to get recognised, ur made.

        – There are levels of being a copycat.

Really? there are levels? lol, wow that is so funny. so please tell me specifically what those levels are? i didnt know there was such a thing. i thought that copying someone is juz that, copying someone, i didnt know that one level of copying is more acceptable than another.

-The worse is when a musician is like Charice who became famous for singing the songs that others have popularized.

u must not have heard of susan boyle then, or those other american idol/britain/america’s got talent contestants like kelly clarkson, jordan, leona lewis etc.

-The Wonder Girls’ case is different story. They didn’t cover the Supremes. Furthermore, they have their own songs specifically made for them including “Nobody” which is reminiscent of the Supremes. Try to broaden your horizon beyong your narrow Anglo centric POV.

and that includes charice, the songs in her album are HER OWN. pyramid might be reminiscent of jojo’s songs but it’s not jojo’s song, jojo never sang it before so how can u call charice a copycat? and btw, u dont consider it copying when a group of people tries to dress in a similar fashion to another more well known group like what the wonder girls did in their own music video? even their name sounds a bit like the supremes, first thing that entered my mind when i heard and saw them were the supremes. their songs are even similar to the supremes. u cant honestly say they are so unique compared to charice that they come off looking better than she does?

all in all, u seem to be biased. u never considered the thought that those asian singers/groups u praise so much desperately want to try to break into the american music industry, hence they went to the US and released albums full of english songs. and their styles and music videos are similar to popular western music groups. let’s not be blind here and pretend that juz coz they’re singing in their own language they are so much more original. i would have understood u more and would have even agreed with u if u had compared charice to someone like stevie wonder who is only one of a few musicians out there who is authentic and unique, and also famous, but u didnt. u mentioned other generic copycat singers out there as being so much better than charice, which not only is ridiculous, it totally negates ur whole argument.

        • About American Idol, Jojo:
The contestants that don’t have their own songs after a certain time deserve criticism. As for Jojo, the song wasn’t good enough to be picked as a single. Yet it’s good enough for a certain copycat. Interesting isn’t it?

LOL. Get yourself a sarcasm machine. So making criticism = “hating”. BTW the Black Eyed Peas have their own material. Charice only got an original song during her third album. What do you have to say about that?

You’re the only one here bringing up singing in Filipino (ok, watered down Tagalog). Why should I support a Filipino musician if he or she isn’t “good”? As for the Anglo centric accusation, I’ve caught you. Only Wonder Girls and Utada have done work in releasing English albums in the US market. You don’t know what you are writing about. The rest aren’t even trying to break thorough. FYI, I didn’t mention any HK musician. It’s pretty damn clear that you need to do more research. I don’t know how you’ll be able to cure yourself of your Anglosphere myopia.

If you can’t see by now, you’re hopeless. Compare Charice’s first album to the Wonder Girls’ counterpart. I’ll give you a hint: it’s called original songs.

all in all, u seem to be biased. u never considered the thought that those asian singers/groups u praise so much desperately want to try to break into the american music industry, hence they went to the US and released albums full of english songs. and their styles and music videos are similar to popular western music groups. let’s not be blind here and pretend that juz coz they’re singing in their own language they are so much more original. i would have understood u more and would have even agreed with u if u had compared charice to someone like stevie wonder who is only one of a few musicians out there who is authentic and unique, and also famous, but u didnt. u mentioned other generic copycat singers out there as being so much better than charice, which not only is ridiculous, it totally negates ur whole argument.”

Let’s look at the bigger picture. Charice is on her third album. As you even admit, Pyramid is reminiscent of Jojo’s previous ones. On the other hand, the Wonder Girls only came off as an Asian Supremes with “Nobody”. I’m assuming you know that the WG have other albums and singles. Considering your Anglosphere myopia, I doubt you know that. Do some research and stop embarrassing yourself on my blog with your Anglocentric views.

You are so out of touch with reality to compare Charice to Stevie Wonder. Comparisons with non American musicians is more appropriate.

  43. Card Crusher,

I just felt bad that you mentioned that copycats are worthy of severe criticsm. Just to remind you that since the time we were born we copycat a lot of things for us to grow and learn to be a human being. we

    • Don
Did your comment get cut off or something? Regarding copycats, reality stings. I’m fine with other people supporting copycats, but they shouldn’t be surprised when others criticize the mimicry at hand.

  44. About American Idol, Jojo:
The contestants that don’t have their own songs after a certain time deserve criticism. As for Jojo, the song wasn’t good enough to be picked as a single. Yet it’s good enough for a certain copycat. Interesting isn’t it?

dude, i seriously dont get why u keep calling charice a copycat when she juz released her own ORIGINAL SONGS, and her album is due out in may. she is only starting out her proper music career right now, so u cant say that charice is like those american idol singers who have not released any new songs of their own. infact, AI singers and america/britains got talent singers are like charice, bcoz they started off singing other ppl’s songs as well. they used their voices to showcase their talent, and did so using popular songs. As for Note to God, if jojo didnt think it was that great to begin with, why the heck did she even bother to record it and put it in her album?

-LOL. Get yourself a sarcasm machine. So making criticism = “hating”. BTW the Black Eyed Peas have their own material. Charice only got an original song during her third album. What do you have to say about that?

dude, ur not criticising, ur hating. ur whole argument is so full of crap that when ppl call u out on it, u resort to childish name calling. being sarcastic and being insulting are two totally different things, and if u cant even see that, then maybe ur the one who needs a brain transplant. ur the one who called me names, implying i hated being asian/filipino and i was dumb, and yet u got all offended when ppl treat u the exact same way. all i can say is what a hypocrite! fyi, u brought up only apl de ap, not the black eyed peas, bcoz u wanted to make a point of having a whole cultural identity.

You’re the only one here bringing up singing in Filipino (ok, watered down Tagalog). Why should I support a Filipino musician if he or she isn’t “good”?

dude, i brought that up bcoz ur the one who brought up that whole cultural identity issue in the first place. one of ur main arguments against charice is that charice is selling herself out by trying to lose her cultural identity, and u used the examples of those japanese singers and latino musicians to back up ur claims about how how much better they are than her because they are able showcase their cultural identity through their music by singing partly in spanish or singing pure japanese without caring about pleasing the american mainstream. if u cant even figure out why i mentioned singing in filipino, then i guess that sadly reflects on ur lack of brain cells.

As for the Anglo centric accusation, I’ve caught you. Only Wonder Girls and Utada have done work in releasing English albums in the US market. You don’t know what you are writing about. The rest aren’t even trying to break thorough.

oh really, so what about boa who went to the US and released an american single? what about rain who released english versions of his albums in the US and even starred in movies there? i guess i caught u there too bud!

-It’s pretty damn clear that you need to do more research. I don’t know how you’ll be able to cure yourself of your Anglosphere myopia.

lol, dude, speak for urself. ur the one who doesnt even know enough of what ur talking about and yet u have the nerve to advise me to research. hahaha. and wow, so the main reason why u accused me of being a self hater/anglo saxon lover wannabe is becoz i dont happen to keep up with korean/japanese pop songs and singers? fyi dude, im not korean or japanese, im filipino and i tend to go more for filipino songs and singers than the so called asian pop singers u keep boasting about. if that’s ur definition of being a hater is, then so be it.

If you can’t see by now, you’re hopeless. Compare Charice’s first album to the Wonder Girls’ counterpart. I’ll give you a hint: it’s called original songs.

lol, dude, ur actually comparing charice’s old album in the philippines, which she made when she wasnt even that well known yet, to the Wonder Girls album? how about u mention instead the release of charice’s new album full of her own ORIGINAL SONGS, and then we can talk and compare.

Clarkson and Lewis had original songs on their first albums. Charice did not. Next.

lol, once again, comparing charice’s original album to clarkson and lewis’ ones is juz so wrong. fyi, she made the album when she was so young, and she made it when she wasnt even as famous as she is now, not to mention the fact that she had no major music producer backing her up. her new album has enough original material in it to shut up her detractors, though i seriously doubt it since they do love to criticise and nitpick juz about every single thing juz so they can spout off their hate. as for clarkson and lewis, their first albums were produced by a famous music producer off a popular tv show, they were both well known already before their albums were ever released, so of course they would have more original and even better songs in their first albums compared to charice’s first one. duh, common sense lang yan dude!

Let’s look at the bigger picture. Charice is on her third album.

yet her third album also happens to be her FIRST US PRODUCED ALBUM, under the direction of one of the best producers in the US, and contrary to her previous unknown albums, has an actual chance of making it big in the US and worldwide.

As you even admit, Pyramid is reminiscent of Jojo’s previous ones. On the other hand, the Wonder Girls only came off as an Asian Supremes with “Nobody”.

wow, ur comparing one single to another single. so ur basing ur whole copycat theory of charice trying to be like jojo on ‘Pyramid’? what about her other songs like ‘Reset’ or ‘In This Song?’ they havent been released yet but if u heard them, let me ask how in the world do they come off as being jojo-esque at all? and oh my gosh, how laughable, ur actually saying Wonder Girls is so much better than charice bcoz only one of their songs is similar to the Temptations songs? well all i can say it that charice is juz as good as they are bcoz only one of her songs is reminiscent of jojo’s previous songs. and dont bother mentioning Note to God, she popularized that song and made it her own, no matter how crap u might think it is, it was good enough to be noticed by the Billboard charts and good enough to move the likes of Oprah to tears.

I’m assuming you know that the WG have other albums and singles.
Considering your Anglosphere myopia, I doubt you know that.
Do some research and stop embarrassing yourself on my blog with your Anglocentric views.

wow, u do juz love name calling when u cant think of a good reply huh.

You are so out of touch with reality to compare Charice to Stevie Wonder. Comparisons with non American musicians is more appropriate.

why should it have to be non americans? i thought ur whole argument was about being original and unique, and no one could be more original and unique than stevie wonder, who not only wrote his own songs but also played his own music and became famous bcoz of it. those non american singers u keep boasting about are juz as every bit as generic and similar to each other, albeit they dont speak english. funny though, but they do get their so called inspirations from american singers. ur way too obsessed with those japanese/korean singers to the point that u laud them over a fellow filipino. whose the real self hater between us both? the person who cant even support a fellow filipino and resorts to using other asian singers to bash on his/her kababayan, or the person who supports his/her fellow filipino who is living out her dreams and trying to make it big in one of the biggest and hardest to get into markets (especially for Asians) in the world, aka the US?

and one more thing, juz a word of advice: try to be more consistent with ur arguments next time. u keep contradicting urself.

    • – You are dense. Charice is only starting out? She’s one her third album! American Idol contestants that are good enough get their original songs shortly after the show ends.

      – You can’t refute my points that you don’t like so labely my arguments as “hating” and “full of crap”. So typical of an onion skinned Filipino. As for Apl. your point is null because he contributes to making Black Eyed Peas material not to mention his side projects. His case makes Charice looks bad.

      – I have a very low opinion of Charice. That’s why I don’t even expect her to have any song in any Philippine based language on her third album. Unlike some of the musicians above who have their non American heritage be reflected on their songs. Once again, Charice looks bad in comparison.

      – Your point about Rain and Boa is duly noted. I was debating whether to include those two, but decided that they will be mentioned in the future when Charice flops. Hint: it’s about the awareness and support for Boa, Rain, and Seven among Asians in the West versus a certain copycat of Whitney/Celine/Jojo.

      – Once again do your research unless you enjoy playing the part of the Anglo centric fool. Furthermore, you’ve admitted that you only follow Filipino musicians, and that bring us to the question of whether you are only supporting Charice because you share the same ethnicity as her. I remember reading this months ago, and I have a feeling that the points made there applies to you : “Filipinos Spit On Themselves By Supporting Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco”.

      – That’s right, I’m comparing the bodies of work of Charice and the Wonder Girls. Once again, Charice looks bad. When Charice was doing her Celine/Whitney copycat thing and releasing two albums full of covers, the Wonder Girls was out there promoting their mini and full albums. Suffice to say, none of the Wonder Girls songs are covers.

-About the Leona Lewis and Charice comparison. Not surprisingly, a Charice fan is making excuses. She was too young, the album was only in the Philippines, blah, blah, blah. Pathetic people and their excuses. Why can’t you admit that Charice’s case looks bad compared to the cases of Lewis and Clarkson?

      – “, how laughable, ur actually saying Wonder Girls is so much better than charice bcoz only one of their songs is similar to the Temptations songs? well all i can say it that charice is juz as good as they are bcoz only one of her songs is reminiscent of jojo’s ”
Reading comprehension. I suggest you pick one up when you visit your local store. Note to God is a crappy song. After Oprah’s viewers and Filipinos abroad bought it, it went into free fall.

      – The comparison with the non American singers listed at the original post is more appropriate. Those musicians were able to demonstrate to some varying degree of success originality and (cultural) identities while breaking through the US music industries.

-It’s very funny that a person who has trouble with comprehension is advising me to be more consistent with my arguments. The wonders of the internet indeed.

  45. You are dense. Charice is only starting out? She’s one her third album! American Idol contestants that are good enough get their original songs shortly after the show ends.

dude, ur the one whose dense. i didnt say she was only starting out with this whole music career, try to read what i wrote first b4 making assumptions ONCE AGAIN. i said she is only juz starting out her proper music career IN THE US. please try to read and reread what i wrote till u finally get it bcoz that’s about as clear as it can get. and btw, b4 u make ur statements, please consider the background info on her first two albums. those two previous ones were made when she was a lot younger than she is now, and were made in both the philippines and sweden. those two albums are not as polished as her brand new album and were released when she was still pretty much an unknown. u shud actually blame the producers, not the singer, bcoz as far as i can tell, when i listened to a few of her songs in her old albums, she sang them perfectly. her talent is undeniable and now she is fortunately under the guidance of a new producer and new manager so u cant actually compare her previous albums to her recent one bcoz hello, most of the songs in her previous albums were not hit makers or were not originals. her new album in the US is the one u should be mentioning coz it’s the one that actually has songs that were written by good songwriters and were made especially for her.
as for american idol, dude, the winners of the show have simon cowell producing their album or backing them up, and have the benefit of gaining exposure on tv to showcase their talent. charice never had that opportunity, even though she entered a singing competition in the philippines, she didnt win and gain the status she has now if it werent for her supporter. who uploaded her videos on youtube. though charice and the american idol contestants are similar in a lot of ways, the ai idols also have had it easier than charice ever did bcoz of american idol.

    – You can’t refute my points that you don’t like so labely my arguments as “hating” and “full of crap”.

ive been refuting ur points ever since i commented on ur blog! ur juz way too dumb to ever figure it out, i feel like im arguing with someone who has an iq of 30 and below.

So typical of an onion skinned Filipino.

oh wow, so ur hating on filipinos now! are u even actually a filipino? bcoz if u r, u r in every sense of the word an actual self hater. juz bcoz u worship other asians, it doesnt give u a right to diss other filipinos too.

As for Apl. your point is null because he contributes to making Black Eyed Peas material not to mention his side projects. His case makes Charice looks bad.

lol, oh my gosh. dude, what are u even on about? u argued against charice being unoriginal and not being true to her self or her culture and u mentioned apl de ap as being someone who is. how is apl de ap more unique than charice? did he actually write all of the songs for black eyed peas? u couldnt even argue my point that apl de ap probably started out singing songs that had nothing to do with his cultural background of being filipino. and i cant believe u actually used apl de ap’s side projects to make charice look bad! hello, did u even know that charice herself has contributed and donated money to charity and typhoon ondoy? did u even know she sang a song for the benefit of a geener philippines? please, ur hatred against a little girl is so scary, i can understand if u dont like her way of singing, but ur dislike of someone juz bcoz of who they are as a person is juz plain scary. either that or ur juz a jealous crab who cant stand the sight of a fellow filipino actually making it this far.

I have a very low opinion of Charice. That’s why I don’t even expect her to have any song in any Philippine based language on her third album. Unlike some of the musicians above who have their non American heritage be reflected on their songs. Once again, Charice looks bad in comparison.

u have a very low opinion of charice as a person, that’s not even critiquing on her music at all, but on herself and her personality. do u even know charice enough as a person to hate her so much? and yes, i do consider that being a hater, bcoz being a hater is someone who hates someone juz bcoz of who they are as a person. ur not even being balanced here, ur obvious bias against her is so sad and truly pathetic. im so disgusted at myself for even taking the time to reply to all ur vitriol, i shouldnt have bothered bcoz ppl like u would never ever change. ur hatred is what keeps u going. and btw, it doesnt matter whether charice has one filipino song in her new album or not. it doesnt change the fact that she is obviously proud of being filipino since she keeps stating it in every concert she’s in, to the point of even singing in filipino in one of her songs in the album. see, ur the one who didnt take the bloody time to research ur info and ur lack of knowledge is so totally embarrassing. i wont bother to reply to anymore of ur lame ass replies bcoz it also doesnt change the fact that i actually and sadly wasted my time in talking to a retard here. so whatever dude, its ur life, its ur blog, feel free to hate whoever u want as much as u want to even if ur reasons for hating on someone doesnt make much sense at all.

    • -When you wrote ” she is only starting out her proper music career right now”, you make a point that anything started in the Philippines is not “proper”, therefore doesn’t count. You further support that idea by making excuses about the lack of polish of those previous two albums. Stop making excuses for Charice. More importantly, you should think for a moment what you wrote. You just demonstrated your colonial mentality. If I go by the logic you presented, then the Ampatuans are not “proper” warlords because they haven’t reached the US where “proper” warlord skills can be polished to perfection.

By downplaying the market in the Philippines, you reveal your train of thought where the grass is always greener on the other side. In addition, by downplaying what’s already happened in the Philippine market, you also demonstrate the “bahala na” and “puwede na yan” attitudes that contribute to making Philippine made products stuck in mediocrity.

-What does Charice singing to fund raise prove about originality? What you don’t get is that Apl has been contributing to the Black Eyed Peas since it started. He has the producer’s credits and Grammy awards to prove his originality. He also has side projects that showcase his heritage. Once again, do some research before ranting about things you don’t understand.

-I’ve already made my position clear why I have a low opinion of Charice: it’s called lack of originality and identity. Read, damn it. Read the damn blog entry.

-How am I hating Filipinos? Just because I called you out on your Anglo myopia, onion skinned nature, and colonial mentality doesn’t mean I hate Filipinos. Fortunately for Filipinos with critical thinking skills, you don’t represent the Filipino people. You are merely an individual, and the Filipino people represents the aggregate total of all the individuals who fit the criteria of what is a Filipino.

-Explain to me why I am a “hater” when I just state my opinions about the lack Arnel and Charice’s lack of identities and originality? That’s not “dissing”. That’s called calling a spade a spade.

-If anybody is a hater here, it’s probably you. You can’t tolerate that other Filipinos have opinions that you don’t agree with. Therefore, you resort to personal attacks in order to dismiss the views that you don’t share. Since you claim that you’ve made your final post here, I’m giving you a parting gift of encouraging your to read Pathetic Filipino Bandwagon “Fans”

  46. Haha, I think cardcrusher is crushing all of charice supporters one after the other!!

Sorry supporters, charice is still nothing internationally!!

    • Hey Luke, I’ve seen you elsewhere in the past sharing your thoughts on Charice. IDK if you still frequent other blogs/articles, but you ought to check this one out. A Charice critic actually stooped to the level of Charice fans. As a hilarious result, those delusional Chasters got a taste of their own medicine, and almost all of them can’t take what they dish out!

  47. I see your point in saying Charice has no originality…but sorry I dont really agree with you… It seems like you are totally blaming Charice and only Charice for what YOU BELIEVE she is now.. and hating her for that matter… Dear you forgot to consider the Filipino culture here… By saying Charice is a copycat, you are also pointing at the entire Filipino modern music culture as a copycat…

Do you regularly listen to those singers in Filipino sunday variety shows? Now do you think they are really being original with all their revivals? I am talking about mainstream here since Charice is trying to break into the US mainstream…

Have you ever been to a baranggay/fiesta amateur singing contest? If so, have you noticed how the judges pick the winner/s? Who do you think are more favored even by the audience? Based on my experience watching these singing contests, the more you sounds like the original singer, the higher your chances of winning no matter how you look (but of course they are not facing cameras LOL)… These aspiring singers have only learned to sing NOT by formal training but through listening to the studio version of those Whitney, Celine and Mariah Carey’s hits… Its not surprising then that they tend to sound like the originals…

Having considered these things, then you have NO RIGHT to say that Charice and Arnel are Asians who just DESPERATELY try to be exactly like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion,Steve Perry, and etc.. YOU CANNOT BLAME Charice and Arnel for they are just products of this processes… Surely then, you cannot compare them to those successful crossovers from other cultures on how they made their ways into the US mainstream… They have shown their identities in their music because they are accepted already… and Asians in general are NOT yet accepted… Americans have failed to see the originality of Asians and yet grabbed ideas like they are the original… Yes even Americans are not that original —> Lady Gaga style screams Jpop!!!

As far as i know, Jpop “give little to no hint of attempting to be more mainstream to attract more American fans” because Japanese love themselves (lol)… They dont need to go into US mainstrean since Japanese music industry is big enough for them not to care about the other music industry (japan is 2nd largest next to US actually)…

As for wondergirls well they only charted in billboard after selling 30K Nobody cds (5 songs) for $1 each… It was actually a desperate move (sorry WG)… If i remember correctly, their Nobody single enjoyed only 80+ spins… As proven by the Wondergirls, being just yourself (as in being Korean bringing their own taste) does not really guarantee you success in the US mainstream… But of course changing your style to suit the Americans doesnt give you recognition either as what happened to BoA, 7even and Utada…

Oh well back to Charice now… I believe Charice is Charice… She is her own self… Why dont you stop crticizing Charice for awhile and check out first her upcoming album… Lets see then if your opinion will change after that (i hope so lol)…and oh! one more thing… I am not supporting charice just because she is Filipino like me… I am supporting the girl because i believe in her talent… 🙂

I know i have written an essay (lol) but i hope you got what i mean…and understood my english… hehe… 🙂

    • Rightly or wrongly, modern Filipino music culture is full of copycats and mimicry. As you wrote describing the local singing contests up to the variety shows, originality and identity are qualities that are not valued. Mimicry is the valued aspect of Filipino music culture.

Arnel and Charice deserve to be partly blamed for their lack of identities and originality. The singers and their handlers should have acted more in tune with the markets they now enter. Nobody makes it big by being a copycat of Whitney, Celine, or Steve Perry especially now that those musicians have faded from the mainstream.

Breaking into the mainstream US is a complex issue. Like the cases of Asians who changed their images slightly and still failed to make an impact you mentioned, the copycat way is also no way to make an impact. Americans co opting Asian trends and shutting the door to those who started it is a bigger issue that deserves more space and scope than a blog comment. Nonetheless, it should be factored in this discussion.

I agree with some of your points, but I have to disagree with you regarding the allocation of blame. Charice and Arnel deserve not all, but a good portion of the blame for their lack of originality and (cultural) identities.

  48. Cardcrusher, i must say YOU’re the MANN, filipina are bitches and whores, and don’t deserve stardom and should be put on there places.. they are good only to scrub floors and wipe white mans asses!!! hahaha..

    • Adam Carolla?! Seriously, that’s pretty racist. There are bitches and whores of every nationality, the Philippines is not an exception of course. As for all of them not deserving stardom and only good for wiping asses, I disagree strongly. If you have said some, I won’t have an objection. In fact, I might even agree, but you’ve crossed the line by painting with such broad generalizations that happen to be racist.

I’m leaving your comment in its unedited form to let others (yes, even my critics) to attack you and your points.

    • @whiteman, I highly doubt you’re white. For one thing, what white person would search up a Filipino related blog in the first place. Second, no white person would even KNOW that Filipino women are called FilipinA. Third, your English is equivalent to a foreigner’s or either you’re just some uneducated white can. Your grammar makes me laugh. To end it, I know for a fact, this comment was made by some idiotic Filipino crab who has this sick theory that every WHITE person that’s racist thinks of Filipinos as what you had stated. You’re not fooling anybody. Think next time, this is the INTERNET. Anybody can pretend to be anybody. Look, I’m African now. “Hi I’m from Africa and I totally think Charice is the best singer I’ve heard. My friends from Nairobi love her.” Hahaha, pathetic Filipino crabs, stooping so low as to hate on their own kind. And yoh wonder why your country isn’t progressing as rapidly as other Asian countries.

    • To ‘whiteman’

I curse you with misery, frustration and failure.

  49. Charice now is a new star,,, I love charice.. sorry to all crabs…

I hope you have an orinality too like other artist… I doubt if you are an artist. Try to look yourself infront of the mirror heheeheh

Eat your “WORDS” my dear, Charice now have own originality… you are too much envious in yourself i am pity with you heheheeh

Charice have own songs now… Congratulations

(CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE: I appreciate the comments, but try to combine your points on a single post. I’ve combined four post of yours into one without altering the comments themselves. )

    • So why am I crab when I give credit to Filipino musicians or of Filipino descent on this blog entry alone? Have you even checked out my blog entries?

Why is this about me when it’s about the points I’ve presented: Charice and Arnel have no identities and originality.

  50. FUCK YOU! BUKAS PATAY KA NA! MASASAGASAAN KA SA EDSA! FUCK YOU

PUTANG INA MO PARE! WALA KANG KWENTANG TAO! NANAY MO PARE KINAKANTOT NG KAPITBAHAY N’YO!

(CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE: I appreciate the comments, but try to combine your points on a single post. I’ve combined two post of yours into one without altering the comments themselves. )

    • Typical ignorant Filipino: wishing death on critics and throwing ad hominems. Tinamaan ka ano?

  51. I am just happy for Charice that she has made it this far. We understand that there are people who don’t like Charice…but they’re just stating their opinion. I like Charice’s songs on her album. But then again, this is better than she has nothing to do. All she wanted was to be popular in the Philippines like Regine and Sarah. There are more people who like her than hate her..so it’s okay… for me, charice is awesome! I like her song “in this song, reset, etc..”

  52. How Philippines can be great again if people like you, who have a writing expertises but narrow intelligence ruining it? Discrediting someone for your own delight only exposing how ignorant you really is. Feeling happy now?

    • Chakyun
First, it’s debatable if the Philippines was ever “great” in the first place. Secondly, the ones with narrow intelligence or lack it are the ones who refuse to evaluate singers or anything from a perspective of originality and identity. I question people and ideas not for my delight, but to examine their worth. How about you? Do you happen to support Arnel and Charice just because of shared ancestry or ethnicity?

  53. @cardcrusher then you are saying that WHITNEY HOUSTON is also a copycat… her song I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU is not her originally it was rearrange by david foster..

looks like you dont know more about in music industry.

come one all new artist they do mimic to get noticed why charice & arnel is a big issue to you? you are a big jealous gay..

music is not mean you make your own song or you sing your own song.. ITS HOW YOU CAN SING AND EXPRESS or DELIVER THE SONG WELL.

    • Bringing out a strawman (or in Whitney’s case, a strawwoman) to cover for Charice. Smart. Real smart.

I disagree with you. Music is about originality and using one’s talent to create. To shallow people, it might be just about a glorified karaoke contest.

  54. you know cardcrusher, it’s people like you why philippines is not developing..instead of helping one to succeed, you are pulling someone down. why don’t you put your knowledge into good use wherein you will be of help than a hindrance..

    • So using critical thinking to evaluate the worth of singers is a hindrance? I disagree. I’m actually helping out people by pointing the flaws of musicians and letting others know about the fault of their “idols”. I’m helping them to think better and widen their knowledge. In this case, I’m presenting them with the case of other non Americans who’ve tried or succeeded in breaking into the US music industry.

  55. So it is with people. If one tries to do something different, get better grades, improve herself, escape her environment, or dream big dreams, other people will try to drag her back down to share their fate.

You are nothing but a typical filipino crab!

    • How could I be a crab when I praise and give credit to Filipinos who deserve them? Have you even read my blog entries? Have you even read what I wrote above? To be honest, you need to use your brain

  56. there is nothing new under the sun.

original or not, nobody can take away the love that charice’s fans worldwide have shown for her. it hurts to read such downgrading comments coming from other local artists’ fans.
whether she’s make it big or not, it doesn’t matter anymore….
She has achieved more than she has ever dreamed
and GOD gave her all this blessings because she deserves it all.

Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever done before, but in doing exactly what you think yourself.

this is a site for SG fans not CHARICE..

(CARDCRUSHER’S MESSAGE: I appreciate the comments, but try to combine your points on a single post. I’ve combined four post of yours into one without altering the comments themselves. )

    • Stop your baseless assumptions. I’m not a SG fan. In addition, you need to look up originality. Your definition of originality is way off its real meaning.

Just admit it, you have nothing to counter my points about the two copycats.

  57. Is this debate really still going on?!! LOL

Charice remains to be a sideshow for when people really really don’t have anything else to do!! Her album is going to yield the same outcome as her poor excuse of song ‘pyramid’!! It had very disappointing results! It was so bad that DJ all around the US couldn’t even play for more than two or three times a day!! It just wasn’t what people wanted to hear!! Many people are saying the song was something that should have been played 10 years ago, not now!! It is already sounding too old and trying hard to be an real r&B song!! Give it up charice supporters, find some other singer that will actually succeed in the mainstream US music industry!!

    • So, what’s your point here? You don’t want her to sing? You don’t want her to have supporters? But you can’t force others not to like here or give up their support. That’s the point. Let others support her. So, what’s your motive of saying that? At least she makes more money than you by doing her thing. It’s a good job…better than your job. get it? =) She’s just happy and she doesn’t dream that big..it’s okay don’t worry about her failure. but the thing is she’s better than you do…you know that….

    • Charice’s album will be out on May 11, 2010. Cardbasher and Luke please grab a copy. She’s awesome! You will like her songs on the album.

She’s only 17 yrs old and you guys are older than her. You should treat her like a baby sister. Are you guys real men why you put down this little girl with a big, soulful, dramatic voice?

Many people are jealous of her because she makes more money than others.

      • Elizabeth
She’s put herself out there in the entertainment front. If she was just a youtube singer who uploaded a video to share to friends and family, your point is valid. In any case, those who are part of the entertainment industry are open to public scrutiny.

    • Luke, “Pyramid” sounds old and generic indeed. It does sound like something that would have been part of Jojo’s old albums. It’s not 2005 anymore.

    • Her album is going to yield the same outcome as her poor excuse of song ‘pyramid’!!

      ___________

Nope…I will NOT give up supporting Charice. You have no right to tell me what or who I should support.

      • Lukeeeeee! It looks like Robert wants to have a word with you! 😉

  58. The thing is Charice has a better job than Cardbasher and Luke. She makes more money than Cardbasher and Luke. Luke, we know that you’re jealous but you deny it. hahaha…whatever you’re just a hater and jealous…

    • So it’s about the money? Your line of thought reveals your shallow nature. It’s about the music.

So you accuse anybody who don’t share the fans’ assessment of Charice as haters and jealous people?

  59. You’re so pathetic. It’s really hilarious. All these posters all POWNED you! Hahahaha. To normal people, you’re just some lame jealous crab trying to get attention. Don’t bother replying back with your wannabe intelligent comebacks. One word for you….DELUSIONAL.

    • I beg to disagree. On the contrary, I’m winning the argument. I don’t need to resort to such low class behavior like the angry Charice fans. Charice fans can’t beat my points so I’m attacked personally.

Why am I crab when I don’t criticize all Filipinos. Can you read? Have you read my other blog entries?

      • How I’d love for you to get murdered. One less idiot in this world. What are you winning? Are you kidding me?! You are losing the battle. Losing so much as to change my sn which was “cardcrushar”. Do you feel threatened? Believe me, you’re losing. Every person has caught you contradicting yourself, you also ignore some valid points made by others. Sorry buddy, but it’s only you who looks like a fool. Quit playing the innocent role because we and I mean the sane people who end up on your sh*tstained blog, know you’re just envious of Charice & Arnel. In the end, you ALWAYS lose. LMFAO!!!

        • ROFL

You remind of onion skinned Filipinos who make a fool of themselves going nuts over people like Chip Tsao, Alec Baldwin, and Adam Carolla. By wishing death to another person just because of mere opinions that you don’t agree with, you reveal what kind of a worthless and primitive person you are.

Due to my experience in Youtube, I won’t let you pick an sn that’s too similar to mine. I’ve seen pathetic Charice and Arnel fans resort to mimicking the name of people that they disagree with in a (futile) attempt to discredit the other person. You can get away with that nonsense elsewhere, but not on my blog.

Just read your comment, and you can see why I’m winning. My nuanced arguments gets onion skinned people like you to rage like primitive beasts. You’d probably commit suicide if I stoop to your level. With that in mind, say hello to Lolo for me at this page http://aatheory.com/2009/11/op-ed-is-charice-pempengco-the-first-asian-superstar-in-america/
It’s amazing people like you can’t take a dose of your medicine.

  60. IM NO GOOD IN ENGLISH ” This is one and last time i visit this blog. This guy has diffrent piont of views. I just read his few response.. He played like HE IS GOOD or LOOKING FOR AN ATTENTION. DO NOT BUY IT..

    • Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Your speculation is flawed. If I wanted attention, I’d present my views at PEX or Pacland.

  61. some say it’s better to be branded copycat than “BORING”.
charice and arnel have reached something that most has never been cause if they have’n’t, i guess crabs won’t even bother to give their time to bash these two undeniable bright stars in their own right.
for foreigners to be able to appreciate and support
these two is already a great achievement……
CHARICE & ARNEL the best is yet to come : )

    • Your point is flawed. Arnel is a member of a has been band. If you ask people (non Filipino bandwagon jumpers not included) about Journey songs and its career, most would not name Arnel. They’d probably mention the time when Steve Perry was the frontman. Second, stop obsessing over crabs. It’s clouding your judgement. Third, you assume that Charice’s third album will be a hit and supported by many people. Counting chickens before the eggs hatch? Not a good idea.

  62. it’s heartbreaking to know people using their God given talents and intelligence to bash other people,
instead of praising other people they admire.
I guess they truly need the attention they have longed for.
it just boils down to one thing “ENVY!”

    • I’m not bashing. What I’m doing is simple comparing and contrasting with some critical thinking thrown to the mix. Why should I praise people that I see as very flawed? It just doesn’t make sense. The “envious” accusation is so mundane especially if it’s coming from Filipinos. Stop using it to defend yourself or people that your support. Don’t use that word as a shield when presented with opinions that contradict your own.

  63. THIS IS A BLOG OF PERSON WITH A CRUSHED HEART : (
I HOPE SOMEBODY WOULD SHOW LOVE TO THIS KIND OF PITY CREATURE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE….

    • What a weak conjecture. Is that all you have to offer?

  64. it’s a pity and a great shame to know a handful of filipino crabs think they’re more talented & intelligent than David Foster and Opra. Who’s comparing this sara to charice, they’re completely in a different status. international is way way way way different than LOCAL : (
sara can have ythe local stage by yourself.
Didn’t this sara love to steal the limelight when she’s on local stage with other local entertainers? ring a bell?..
it only shows she doesn’t have the breeding to be an international star…

    • Are you lost? WTF are you writing about?! Why are you and two other foolish commenters bringing up Sarah? Can you read? If you can, you”d know that she is irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Let me remind you that Charice and Arnel are compared and contrasted with non Americans who have tried or succeeded to break into the mainstream US market. Can you tell me how Sarah fits into that?

Secondly, why am I a crab? If you can use your puny brain, you’d see why your accusation is so off the mark. Please use your brain once in a while.

Last, what makes David Foster and “Opra” so special that you can elevate them to arbiter status? Do their status mean that their views can be used to nullify the views of others. Careful ignorant Chaster, you are going down a slippery slope.

  65. NO, what’s amazing is how one-sided your mind works. How stupid are you? Honestly, it is mind baffling how freaking annoying you are. To everyone who reads ALL your comments on EVERY Charice blog written, you come off desperate. Your credibility is so far gone that it’s useless to even bother critiquing Charice. You are one desperate pathetic excuse for a human. You’re obsessed also! I bet you search up Charice EVERY DAY!! Well, you’re chaddicted. No matter what you say about her, you obviously like her enough to keep talking about her, searching her up, and making comments regarding her performances. CONGRATULATIONS, you’re a certified CHASTER (as they call Charice’s fans).

    • Lame Chaster demonstrates the thin skinned nature of many Filipinos and Charice fans. It is up to those with critical thinking skills to guide the ignorant.

  66. Cardcrusher, I admire your writing. I admit I read everything from the top down to the last comment, well except to some of those written too long defending Charice. You presented your case in a logical and respectful way. I do agree with you that Charice and Arnel had been singing others songs and you can expect that from them as they were really not professional artists beforehand probably until they were discovered and given chance. For that I cannot blame them and I do respect your opinion by pointing that out.

Now, we know Charice just finished her first international album and soon to be released. If the album sells out better than your standard and the sound of the songs cater her voice would you honestly say that Charice indeed is not just a copycat and indeed an artist? I am critical as you when comes to original music but I would say that I would be the first to give credit to where the credit is due. I hope you too are my friend.

Have a nice day. Oh, I must say you can be a very good writer to a major publication just stay away with the trolling.

    • As you’ll notice the original blog entry is a couple of months old, and there are a couple of developments that have happened including Charice having her own songs on her upcoming album. With that in mind, Charice is not an absolute copycat anymore. As for her developing as an artist, I can’t make an assessment as of this moment because she has not yet written/ composed/ produced songs and she’s only now getting songs not handed down to her from other musicians/producers. As a critic, I’ll be sure to state opinion of that in the near future along with my thoughts on her upcoming album

I might have too busy repelling Charice fans here, but I’ve given Charice credit (on another music blog) for improving her skillsets as a singer. It was pretty obvious that she’s improved as singer from watching her recent live performances of her new songs in comparison when she was an absolute copycat.

BTW I’m not trolling. If I were, I would utlilize the full spectrum of trolling skills of a /b/tard. I’ve just gone around airing my views of Charice. Besides, trolling Filipinos (a demographic that makes up the most vocal and early fanbase of Charice) is no fun. As written in one chan ,” trolling Filipinos is as easy as shooting reporters riding on vans” (NOTE: I didn’t come up with that, it’s from a small chan)

  67. While you’re at it, write a blog which says “Kobe sucks”, or “lebron owns Kobe”. I guarantee you that’s a big hit. TROLL!

    • If you have been paying attention to sports coverage in the US for a couple of years, you’d have known that topic has been well explored. Welcome to 2010!

  68. comment 1 i hope this crusher would soon find something
relevant to do than bashing and be so all knowing about other people especially those who started life right like charice and arnel.
i bet the life she’s living is so great and so perfect.
i bet she knows everything about life inlike other people.
i bet she’s so so so perfect any way you look at her. i bet she’s so pretty and intelligent cause she act like one. i bet she knows a lot about music and originality and everything this earth has to offer.
i wish i could inherit even a millionth of what cardcrusher’s brain capacity.
    .
.comment2 i thought life is a mystery. you only have to do something good and who knows what comes along.
i think charice and arnel never knew what’s instore for them in the future.
if charice knew opra and david foster would support her career by just singing celine’s and whitney’s songs, then I guess she would not enter singing contest in the first place. why not send a demo to them in the beginning.
you just can’t dictate your destiny.
what they did was never wrong. and your big brain can’t just judge them if at the start they were imitating their idols.
who are we to judge? there’s no rule in life but just be a GOOD human being.
you’re just making life complicated cause you have a complicated life.
    i could sense it.

Cardcrusher’s note: I combined your two comments into 1 without altering the comments themselves

    • 1.) Your assumptions and speculations are not helping you at all. If you can’t handle criticism, you are free to ignore my blog and opinions.
2.) Try to avoid long winded comments that comes off as rubbish

  69. I’m sorry, cardcrusher, i think you’re losing the battle here. I don’t even wanna explain how. If you haven’t figured it out on your own by now, you never will. Just because you can articulate yourself well doesn’t make you right.

I, for one, loved charice’s single, “Pyramid”. She sang beautifully. Yeah, it’s a song written for her… but most artists, even the ones you point out as being original, have most of their songs written for them. So you can’t fault charice for that.

But your opinion is your own. So, I’ll just respect that.

    • I disagree. You’re counting the chickens before they hatch. Due to a couple of factors, I foresee that Pyramid (and Charice’s third album) will be a mild hit at best, probably due to an Oprah boost. I’m just throwing my opinions here, not making pronouncements that are “right”. You’re free to have your own opinions, and I won’t hold it against you.

On a minor note, the musiscians I’ve mentioned either have songs made for them or they make them themselves. Not like a certain copycat who had two albums chock full of cover tracks.

  70. the reason why charice pekpekmo is not making a big hit in the flippines is because pinoys are not craving on that tiny asian tight pussy. only american pedos do. america’s fascination with charice is all sexual. and that’s the truth.

    • Ohh, that’s not going to make those delusional Charice fans happy. Good luck and Godspeed.

  71. Feeling ni cardbasher may talent sya..wala naman. susulat kunwari sa blog nya pero puro kamalditahan naman pinapakita. ano naman makukuha mo sa ginagawa mo cardbasher? mukha kang tanga sa pinagagawa mo.

    • LOL. Read what you just wrote. You personalize the debate. Instead of misguidedly focusing on me, why don’t you address the issues that the blog entry has put on the table? I realize that it might not be the norm for you, but can you handle using a bit of your brain?

        • You still conveniently ignore the issue about originality and identity. Come on! Ang kitid ng pagiisip mo!

Please address the issue of originality and identity. Don’t get hanged up on who is doing the criticism. You remind of the people still stuck in the cave as described by Plato.

        • Cardcrusher’s note: Comment deleted due to redundancy. Elizabeth, you’re repeating the same damn thing. Next time make a comment without repeating what you already pointed out.

  72. It’s plain and simple, cardcrusher wants people to read his blog that’s the reason for the negatives about charice and arnel. Publicity is the word. In other words it’s bullshit!

    • What publicity? If ignoring criticism will help you sleep better at night, by all means, ignore the criticism. Ignoring them won’t make Arnel and Charice have more originality and identities though.

  73. cardcrusher = the best thing since sliced bread

Cardcrusher’s note: The comment maker failed to read the warnings about unacceptable comments. Therefore, I’ve modified it.

  74. cardcrusher is a brave person who exposes the true nature of Charice and her delusional fans

Cardcrusher’s note: The comment maker failed to read the warnings about unacceptable comments. Therefore, I’ve modified it.

      • This is the type of moronic thinking that makes Filipinos look bad whenever somebody like Chip Tsao, Adam, Carolla, and Alec Baldwin makes “controversial” comments about the country and its people.

  75. How does it feel to be hated on EVERYDAY? Does it get any easier?

    • The hate validates my point. It’s like Adam Carolla’s point about the Philippines being proved right by the morons who overreacted and resorted to making physical and death threats.

  76. cardcrusher…… i am a filipino … ur article about charice and arnel are not acceptable for me and my fellow filipinos .

    • Why isn’t my blog entry acceptable to you and your “fellow” Filipinos?

  77. cardcrusher,
Not entirely sure where you stand since this post was made a long time ago and I’m not going to waste my time reading all your replies to your hate mail, but I’m sure it sums it up to say that you still dislike talented artists like Charice (no. more like hate. because dislike would be an understatement, in my opinion but that’s just my opinion). But just so you know, if you still think she’s going down, I think you are about to be proven wrong. Now I was never a big fan of Charice because I didn’t really know her up until today when I saw her in a music video that has nothing to do with impersonating an already established artist or in other words what you love to call it as having ‘no originality and identity’.

    Note:
(that doesn’t mean I didnt know her AT ALL. I have heard of her because she was featured on shows, the media buzz that she received [ie. being on our local late night news for being featured on major shows like oprah and ellen] and as a result peers from my school talked about her and word of mouth spread)

And I don’t really know where you are residing or what your background is (I don’t care enough to know you) I’m from Canada and “mainstream” music that you love gets played from MuchMusic here and the video I saw her on is getting heavy rotation on that channel.. try everyday. My point being is just stop hating. No one is forcing you to like these artists (or in your words “copycats”). In every case of becoming an artist of your own you need inspiration and idols. Just let it go, she does have talent, and is among those who pursue their dreams by taking the right stepping stones to promote herself in the right direction: positive direction, not by doing stupid publicity stunts of explicit manner. How can you sit there and say that she doesn’t have talent when she’s being compared to great talent? You’re already proven wrong and sooner than later this post will be invalid and you will be known as “one of the ‘haters’ that have nothing to do but bash these successful people”. My only concern is why are you treating these artists like they committed a heinous sin? Stop making a big deal out of nothing. I guess there will always be people like you who try to make people crash and burn when really they don’t need to respond to you because their succession is enough to prove you wrong. Open your mind. What one may like you may not. That doesn’t mean you should try to change other people’s mind by responding as though you aren’t seeing their point made across. The point is Charice, “copycat” or not she’s in demand and in demand for one reason only: talent. Now you may not agree, but that’s YOU. Stop trying to prove points that in reality don’t matter.. She’s famous for a reason that even you made a post about her (and yes I know the post wasn’t entirely of her. but it does consist of her) Even if this is her 15 minutes of fame, or she actually becomes an established artist, who are you to judge her and criticize her for pursuing her dream? You’re not God. And these ‘copycats’ (you say) have a right to freedom of pursuit of happiness. You should be happy for your fellow Filipinos, not bashing them.

One more thing, these “copycats” aren’t identity thieves. They didn’t put on a mask or wig to look like them, they sure don’t personify themselves to act like their idols, and they sure as hell aren’t changing their skin or race to be like their idols. They are emulating their idols by showcasing their talent.

And one last thing, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey etc. etc. didn’t hire you to speak for them. They are actually more accepting and welcoming of Charice because they recognize her talent enough to let her perform with them. You don’t hate on true talent, you embrace it!
I’m not here to change your mind, just here to tell you to OPEN your mind and change HOW you see.

    Stay positive,
    reader

    • First, I don’t hate Charice or Arnel. I simply dislike them and have never mentioned that they lack talent. I actually give them lots of credit for their mimicry skills.

Why don’t YOU open your mind?! Just accept that my opinion differs from yours. If you like copycats, that’s your problem and I won’t stop you from liking them, but don’t expect me to like them and lecture me on my turf. BTW I still think that little Celine/Whitney/Jojo clone will be a flop. After an Oprah boost, she doesn’t have a fanbase big enough and has nothing to bring to the table (apart from her mimicry skills) to make others buy her Jojo sound alike album much less pay attention to her.

  78. cardcrusher, i do agree with what you said that pyramid sounds so similar to jojo’s songs a few years back.

    • I expect that there’ll be more people like you when Charice benefits from an Oprah boost.

      • i’m not a big fan of hers. when i first her saw on television, she looked like 12 years old. she is already 18, and she still looks like she’s 12. she has this wholesome conservative image makes her look immature. i don’t like her songs, its not something i would keep listening to. i keep hearing pyramid on the radio, i’m already getting tired of it. also i saw her on the news last year when her car was robbed of her valuables worth 10,000-20,000 pesos. when she was being interviewed she didn’t look shocked or worried that she became victim of open car theft. she just laughed and smiled during the whole interview. its like she didn’t care that she had been robbed. i think just because she is becoming rich, she is already is disregarding the value of money.

        • Interesting. Taylor Swift has a wholesome and (partly) conservative image as well, but she doesn’t come off as immature.

Have you heard Charice’s other songs from her newest album? The reviews have been all over the place, but as expected, Charice fans overreact to views that they don’t share. Check this one out, lol.

There are far worse things than looking younger than one’s age. It might be one of the few things that could work in Charice’s favor assuming she isn’t dropped by her label.

        • Charice dropped way down from the billboard top 200. From #8 she went to 31, from 31 down to 81. Then 81 to 162, she went down really fast.

      • thank you for sharing your views i like your blog btw. i read all of your haters comments. they overreact too much, they don’t know how to respect one’s opinion. you have good substantial arguements. keep up the good work. God bless.

        • I appreciate your kind words.

I have to disclose that if not for some overzealous and uncivilized Charice fans who came in here and my YT account, I wouldn’t be as outspoken about Charice.

  79. Firstly, it does not take a rocket scientist to realize that Charice has a greater voice range over Jojo. As for the Pyramid song itself, there is no way Jojo can sing that song in the same manner as Charice. Just direct your ears to “Note To God” and compare the two singers. JoJo’s version seems to lack that specific element that would speak to you. To this end, one can conclude that if Jojo attempted to sing Pyramid, it would most definitely not be qualified by the same voice range.

As for you cardcrusher, “Originality” is this the best you could do to try to bring down two great singers. You truly are pathetic. With every endeavour in life, one is faced with many paths. Some people have the luxury of having options others do not. In the cases of Charice and Arnel, they did the best with the cards they were dealt with. They were persistent with their passion which has ultimately led them to success. The fact that you are ridiculing the only paths they could take shows your level intelligence or lack thereof.

    Get some help dude

BTW – In case you did not know, Arnel’s CD contained 1 CD with old songs and 1 CD with new songs. As for Charice, her Album lands May 11, 2010 (All Original Songs of many genres).

FYI: I have very strong ties to the music and film industry and I can tell you that your argument is baseless and without merit. And anyone who gives it any credence is either in a state of denial or is lacking in the area of brain cells.

  80. Why delete my blog ? Are you scared of the truth?

The fact that you are ridiculing the only path they could take shows your level intelligence or lack thereof.

    • With morons like you that don’t value originality and having strong “ties” to the music and film industries, it’s not surprising that those two industries are in decline.

Stop condoning mimicry. You’re simply making excuses for Arnel and Charice’s lack of originality and identities. Perhaps if you open your eyes, you would see that people don’t spend as much of their money on films and albums because of the repetitive shit out there.

If your hearing was still intact, you’d notice that “Note To God” was butchered by Charice. The way she sang it is so overdone.

BTW: Arnel didn’t contribute to the creation of those songs. He was just hired to sing them and be a mercenary.
FYI: Anyone who gives you any credence is either in a state of denial or is lacking in the area of brain cells. Your strong ties to the film and music industries won’t excuse mimicry. It also won’t stop people from buying dvds and albums less and less.

  81. The only moron here is you. First of all where in my blog does it say that I do not value originality and that I condone mimicry? Please show me. How you arrived at such a conclusion leaves a lot to the imagination – lol. The only reference to such an issue was in the context of the path that both singers had no choice but to take. How your little mind inferred that I do not value originality and condone mimicry is clearly indicative of your intelligence level.

As for your ignorant statement regarding the decline of the music and film industry, I think the latter (which is the case in some markets) is more a direct result of technology as opposed to this word “originality” which you seem to hold very close to your chest – lol.

Again back to this obsession you have with the word “originality.” If after their success Arnel and Charice were to continue to sing other peoples’ songs than I would grant you this argument, but you see that is not the case. Both singers are now singing their own songs in their own style. I have spoken with many old Journey fans and they all say that Arnel’s style is different from SP, in that, he has a greater range and his voice is not as effeminate. I am not saying that SP was not a good singer. Just that we are dealing with two great singers with 2 different styles. As for Charice, her vocal range and melody alone sets her apart from the others. So in the context of their singing styles they are both original. I bet you have not even heard Charice’s new songs (www.charicemusic.com ) if you dare – lol

As for their songs being written by other songwriters, that is how the music industry works. There are songwriters, music producers and singers. Over time I am sure both artists will develop enough experience to write and score their own music – if not learn to play an instrument or two.

With respect to your comment that Charice butchered the song “Note To God,” you will have to excuse me, but unless you can prove to me that you are a successful music producer, I think it would be best to defer to the legendary David Foster who produced the song. And just in case you do not know what a producer does, that means he told Charice how to deliver the song.

As for album sales, are you kidding? The Journey Album with Arnel was a major success. Concerts were sold out in hours. As for Charice, her song “Pyramid” is currently #4 on the Dance/Club Play Songs Chart http://www.billboard.com/#/charts/dance-club-play-songs?tag=chdrawer . Where do you get your facts from? Let me guess, it’s all that crab you are eating that is causing all your delusions.

Unless you can articulate yourself in a more concrete fashion, don’t bother replying. For the lack of a better analogy this is like the Manny vs Cotto fight except in words. Save yourself the punishment and embarrassment and quit now.

    • Douchebag, bring it on. While you’re at it, continue to make excuses for Arnel and Charice’s mimicry. It’s so amusing!

Instead of calling out Arnel and Charice for their lack of originality and identity, you build a strawman and goes on and on about how they had no choice but to go on those paths. Are you also selling the Brooklyn bridge?

Charice’s new music is all about her becoming a Jojo clone. Next.

“Note To God” was butchered by that little Jojo clone. I call bullshit on your credentialism shtick. David Foster is a has been, and you would have had a point if it was 1994. Welcome to 2010 BTW!

If you count doing State Fairs as a success, then by all means keep arguing that Journey is still successful. Wake me up when Charice cracks the Hot100 or Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks. After an Oprah boost, her Jojo like album will sink into insignificance.

      • Cardcrusher’s note: When you can offer other things than ad hominems, you can come come back and leave comments. You failed to read the warnings on the blog post.

  82. BLAH BLAH BLAH. All I have to offer are ad hominems and attacks on those with views I don’t share.

Cardcrusher’s note: I cleaned your message. Come back when you have something substantial to offer. Are you the person who keeps searching for “cardcrusher” and “blog”?See below.
    butthurt charice fans

  83. Knew it!!! You are indeed a Freddie Aguilar fan.LOL Baduy mo Day!! Sorry ka na lang… Yang Aguilar na yan MATAGAL nang LAOS.. NO CHANCE na ang singing career nyan. Amoy LUPA NA YAN! Why do I have a feeling na magka Berks kayo.LOL

    • You fail to realize that Freddie didn’t need help from Americans in the entertainment industry to popularize his song, “Anak”. It sold millions of copies while being localized into many different languages. Your disregard of a music icon reveals more about yourself than your speculations about me and insults to Freddie.

  84. It is quite a shame that most great artist from my country the Philippines are not easily recognized because for one, they do not fall under the “hunk” or “hot” standard. It’s just my observation but you have to fall under those categories first before you are really taken seriously.

In Charice’s and Arnel’s defense, struggle is an understatement. It’s quite ironic that it’s their covers of those other great singers that started their successes as artists. They didn’t even asked for it. Charice sung a Whitney song at a contest and Arnel was covering Journey among others (you should hear his earth wind and fire covers too!). They are not composers or music geniuses at that, they are just very talented singers and man can they sing. Were they offered a recording deal? Were they given their own songs to sing? Arnel had a single or an album I think! But were they taken seriously? of course not! So who got the part? Actors!!! yeah that’s right! Actors with Albums and doing almost sold out concerts! I mean really…go figure!

So I guess doing those covers might not be a bad idea as a stepping stone after all. People dig it! In Charice’s case it paid off. She’s singing her own songs now. She’s finally taken seriously. Not instantly, it took a while (Although many still claim it still too soon..not even going to get into that..whew!).Not from her own but from some place else, where talent had a chance. Again she didn’t literally ask for this to happen. But it happened to her. She did pray for it. Let’s give her credit for that.

Well they are in the major leagues now. I’ve wrote this before, wider audience, BIGGER competition and a BIGGER Jury! People will have their say, good, bad, even hateful or hurtful. I’m a fan, I get it. That’s the price any artist is willing to pay just be given a chance at the majors.

As a fan I am only asking people give her a listen.
I’m not pushing my luck and forgive me for trying but for fans or otherwise, I’d appreciate a little objectivity and subtlety 🙂

    Peace out.

    • Good points. The Philippines and some other countries have the weird practice of actors who don’t have much musical talent actually becoming successful “musicians” (and I use the term very loosely). I still can’t believe that the host of Wowowee actually has albums that sell more than decent numbers according to some sources. Arnel and Charice now deserve credit for having their own original songs.

      • Used to be fan of Willie. They should reconsider a new host.
As for the aspiring singers, until the music industry’s culture changes, we will have to hear more of covers if only to be identified.
And is it just me but I’m sure fond of the Hot Babes! hahaha!

Anyway, might want to check out “Anacbanua”. I met the young director here in Riyadh. Never really gotten to see it but it had good reviews.

        • I really can’t comment about the show due to never having seen a full episode of it. The first time I heard of it is due to the death of people waiting to go to the show.

The country definitely needs to change how it views originality and identity in many fields. I didn’t realize how bad mimicry is as practiced in the Philippine entertainment industry until I’ve been away for a while.

Thanks about the tip about “Anacbanua”. It definitely has positive reviews. It’s too bad, I can’t watch most of the indies without resorting to less than legal ways. I feel bad about it because the indie artists deserve the patronage, and I don’t mind shelling money to get original DVDs of film featured at Cinemalaya or CineManila. Even at big stores back in the Philippines, the balikbayan I asked to pick a couple of DVDs got funny and confused looks when asking for some indie titles.

  85. cardchrusher???? Now this the right time, make yourself useful about COPYCAT ARTISTS.. There is always a RIGHT TIME….

    • I apologize, but I fail to get your point. Care to elaborate more? Is it the right tome to (criticize?) copycat artists? Is that what you meant?

  86. I appreciate your being nationalistic. But then you don’t have to put down fellow Filipino artist who are trying their luck in the US. You know when the issue about Freddie Aguilar came out, Charice said she knows in her heart that she is “Filipino”..

Is there really such as thing as concrete “Filipino”..Ang lengwahe pa lang natin, mixture na cya ng iba’t ibang lahi.

I’ve watched a lot of her Youtube videos…and some comments are made by FELLOW FILIPINOS which really hurts..This is exactly one of the reasons kung bkit di tayo umaasenso. Ok lang sana, kaso ipost sa internet habang nababasa ng ibang lahi.

Being Filipino is not only speaking TAGALOG..PLease take time to listen to Charice new album… And it is doing well in the US. She’s # 6 Hot Artist in mtv.com and I read one comment @ her fan site that she’s currently # 15 in one of the charts in Thailand. She was able to reach different races all across the globe.

    • I agree that defining “Filipino” could be difficult, and it certainly is more than speaking Tagalog.

I don’t agree with those Filipinos who criticize Charice due to her physical aspects. My reason for not supporting her is that she was a copycat and her original songs now make her come off as a Jojo/Jordin Spaks clone. I simply can’t support someone I don’t have a preference for even if he/she is from the Philippines.

I give Charice credit for her talent and progress, but that doesn’t mean I have to support her just because she’s from the same country I used to live in. Since she’s a musician, it has to be about the music.

  87. PS On your argument na naging sikat ang Wonder Girls sa bansa nila…

Charice was never given that chance here in the Philippines… I used to vote her during LBS days because I saw her talent..But what happened, everyone chose the ever PRETTY BOY Sam Conception @ that time..

Charice was never noticed until she was invited to Star King, Ellen and Oprah.. Sadly people here are still bashing her firstly for not being the Filipino’s idea of beautiful..

And also please research on Wonder Girls and other K-pop artists…. Yes they sing in their language but did you think they all make their own music? Please check again….

Korean Entertainment companies work with foreign writers and producers:

    http://www.myspace.com/seanalexander

Care to check his site? Some of the artists on his sample works are K-pop artist. So before you begin to praise Wonder Girls…

    QUOTE:

The Wonder Girls of South Korea toured with the Jonas Brothers. Unlike Charice, the Wonder Girl’s song was able to get radio airtime in the US. In addition, the Wonder Girls was able to grow a big fan base in South Korea (& create a dance craze throughout Asia and beyond) before heading off to the United States. In comparison, Arnel and Charice had very little to no fan base in the Philippines before getting noticed by Americans.

Think again…The so called Wonder Girls are also struggling with their English so they can make it big in the US. Of course you might want to check iTunes, Amazon and what have you…It is not Wonder Girls that is “So Hot” right now..It’s Charice….Charice who endured a lot of ridiculing from Filipinon non-believers..

@ least, please give her a credit for having worked hard to be where she is right now..She doesn’t know you and she does not even know about this blog… So please let her be…..

  88. L – O – L
it isn’t just their “copying” that made them famous, heck if it is, anyone could be famous, anyone could be in a famous band and get noticed by oprah or ellen.

it is because they are truly talented..
as for charice, i think her discovery is inevitable, such talent wouldn’t just go unnoticed

    • I agree that Charice and Arnel have some talent. It’s the application that I have an issue with, and that includes their mimicry.

  89. Originality? you are very much unfair to Charice since she has no formal training on how music is produced. I mean, come on for a 15/16yo?, it’s just & fair for her to rely on her record label/manager to produce such materials. Her innate talent for delivering such big songs/classic ballads with confidence is what we fans are up to. She’ll get there soon enough. Lastly, we must accept that we all have place in this world, some are gifted with songwriting(profound/poetic/moving) ability, play instruments, vocal ability, etc. etc. or some even have all of those skillsets. You just can’t dictate all the listeners to put critical thinking before enjoying a song..haha

Btw, Charice debuted #56 at the Billboard Chart Hot 100 single, #8 BB200 album, #32 BB-Digital Songs.:)

    • Rico, nobody pointed a gun at Charice to force her in that direction. There are ways and means to have originality and identity when making music. We’ll see if she can actually differentiate herself from those she mimicked or the musicians she now sounds too closely (Jordin Sparks/Jojo)

  90. All I can say is that you are being way harder on your own people than you are to others.

Give them a break. Why don’t you spend the same boundless amounts of time and energy breaking down and finding flaws in other artists as you do in these two? I get it, you’re an artistic, indie, underground type of guy. The Wonder Girls were a manufactured band. Lots of artistic integrity in that too, huh.

My opinion is that Charice, while covering Whitney songs, she at least did it with lots of conviction and passion. That is a form of artistry.

Can’t say anything about Arnel Pineda, havent really followed him, but Kudos to him for being selected.

The story of the success of these two is very common, wherever you live and whatever you may be. It just seems like to me that you spend a lot more time dissecting them. Give them a break (not like they need anything from you).

Anyway, that’s all. I’m sick of the drama brought about by the rise of these two.

    • Good points on Charice and Arnel taking the opportunities given and available to them, but that doesn’t mean they have a free pass from the consequences of their actions.

You want to know why I’m outspoken about Charice and Arnel? Well, I didn’t rate them at all previously and kept that to myself. When Freddie Aguilar came out with his “controversial” statement, I put my two cents and was cursed, threatened with physical violence, and basically insulted by Charice/ Arnel fans and “patriotic” people. That’s how it got started.

  91. Also, I think some artists have to make what they can out of the cards that they were dealt. If it means you first have to cover songs (just like American Idol), then be it. Charice was given an opportunity to work with a legendary songwriter, she learned, was able to show off her vocal prowerss, and put food on the table at the same time.

Not all music has to have a cultural flavor to it….there’s so much music out there….lighten up and just have fun. Music can be good for that too.

ps I didnt even know who the Wonder Girls were until I saw them as part of a line-up in an L.A. concert in which Charice closed the show. nobody knows who the Wonder Girls are right now.

  92. I didnt even know who the Wonder Girls were until I saw them as part of a line-up in an L.A. outdoor concert in which Charice closed the show. nobody knows who the Wonder Girls are right now.

I think some artists have to make what they can out of the cards that they were dealt. If it means you first have to cover songs (just like American Idol), then be it. Charice was given an opportunity to work with a brilliant and legendary songwriter, who endorsed her to sing her songs. She learned, was able to show off her vocal prowerss, and put food on the table at the same time.

there’s so much music out there that are just plain part of the mainstream….lighten up and just have fun. Music can be good for that too.

( Cardcrusher’s note: Why do you have the same IP as Tammy? Are you a sock puppet?)

  93. nope, it’s because when I tried to post again, it said I already posted that comment…so i tried using another name and another e-mail, just so I could post and not waste what I just typed….dont worry i’m aware that a dup IP is something you could easily catch. “sigh” was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a name…cuz that’s what I was doing…

ufff…nothing like pounding down a carne asada burrito after a long day!!! so yummy but now I think I have food coma =/

  94. oh haha…i guess it did post the first time…my bad.

  95. oh yeah I do have to thank you for enlightening me about Filipino independent films…sounds interesting, I’m gonna go check them out! =)

    • You’re welcome! The indie scene has been booming since digital film making made it possible to produce films with less costs. I only wish I could go back and watch the indies featured at the Cinemalaya festival.

  96. Hello there. Just wanted to refute your post in the most civil manner possible. I liked how you cited the Wonder Girls as counterargument to reinforce your premise on Charice and Arnel, when said group is nothing but a copycat of Western pop music, channeling melodies of Mandy moore or Brittany and in essence, sounds like a mediocre singing White girl. The produced tone of their music, without the vocals, are The way they dress are even an apparent copycat of old hollywood.

You also pointed out that both singers never had a fanbase in the Philippines. Why put the blame on them instead of the lack of support from the OPM? Charice is called ugly by Filipinos as she doesn’t fit the mold of the Filipino celebs who should have a hint of European descent to be successful locally. It took Oprah and Ellen to recognize her talent, it’s quite a shame really, and shame on you for blaming them. Arnel has been called names by the uber Journey fanatics that despite his insane talent, they point out that he only stands 5’4″ and looks like a “monkey” if you ever have gone to a journey forum 2 years ago.

What I am saying is, Arnel and Charice are not copycats as you have qualifed them to be. With you saying the girl is a copycat of Whitney, Celine and Toni B, are you suggesting that the previous 3 are copycats of each other? Charice has her own style of music and your article was a failed sloppy generic attempt to prove it. You can say that Charice has a style similar to Whitney and the rest when she tries to render their songs in the David Foster tour, but that was the point of it all. David puts up a slideshow of whitney, interviews and tributes from whitney to david prior to every rendition of her songs by Charice. Charice sings it as a tribute to Whitney’s vocal ability. If you really are a music buff, you would notice the riffs and runs of Charice are hers, and hers alone, and not the style of Whitney. Just do a search on youtube of a live performance of Charice at DF’s tour, and compare that with Whitney’s. It’s quite different. But the chorus are all pure Whitney’s deep voice courtesy of Charice.

Now with Charice’s new album, she sounds exactly like herself from start to finish. I don’t think you can argue with this one sorry. SOME of her tracks are reminiscent of Jordin Sparks’s because they both have the same producer – obviously. She can’t act all diva at this point and be choosy with which producer she should work with because she’s given this opportunity and must be grateful. When she reaps all the money she’ll earn from this album, then she can probably have a say. See, even Kelly Clarkson herself mentioned her track sounded like a rehashed “Halo” by Beyonce – because they had the same producer, vocalist Ryan Tedder.

As for Arnel, he was chosen because he sounds like Steve Perry, but he likewise incorporates his own style of singing to it. Journey replaced their previous lead singer from Oz because they really aren’t selling at all. He sounds worse than Perry. Charming, tall and thick head of hair he may have been, that’s not enough to gain a huge amount of sales, something that Arnel did.

If you really wanted for minority-looking brown diminutive Asians to succeed in this business, you cannot shock the American audience by embracing them for being “original” right away. It’s already a steep climb for them not being loved by their own people because nobody wanted to work with them to do ORIGINAL pilipino music.

All of the artists you mentioned except for maybe Don Ho and Jocelyn Enriquez, pass as White. They’re white Latinos and non-Hispanic Whites, except for the blacks like Apl, which of course is a given in the US. Only Blacks and Whites are given the opportunity in US Music.

In closing, for Arnel, you may probably have a case that he is a “copycat”. For Charice, however, you might want to update this blog article because she has her own single now and sounds like herself.

  97. You know, the thing that is wrong here is that these 2 artists are being singled out. If the author really has a problem with originality and identity, maybe he should be calling out the attention of the filipino music industry instead, as well as the filipino music lovers who don’t appreciate their own.

To single out these 2 artists is unfair, especially with Charice’s case.

It was premature to state that these 2 really had no originality and identity because they were still starting out. I think, 2 years before this article, Charice was already working on her album with all original songs. So before and during the time the author was writing this, Charice was already doing something that was uniquely her own. I also learned that the reason the album took a long time to release was not only because of meticulous selection of songs to be included and quality recording time(unlike her previous local albums which took only 2 weeks to finish), but also, her management team wanted to release her as “CHARICE” the solo artist, only when she turned 18. She just turned 18. As far as I see it, all their plans are coming to fruition. It was a strategy and it is now paying off. These kind of strategies can never be done in the local pinoy music scene because it takes much time and money. I think the author is not used to it hence his premature notions. Right now, it’ll be much better to just sit back and observe her career progress, and if the author and filipino critics are really smitten to not resist in criticizing her, maybe they can do it when the time comes she’s an established artist. Because as I see it, the kid keeps proving these “critics” wrong as she grows and as her career advances. The more she keeps proving these critics wrong, the more they look… well… ridiculous.

The amount of time and effort they also take to criticize this kid and arnel is also very odd… I would understand fans taking the time and effort to rave for their “idol”, well because, they’re fans and that’s what fans do. But I don’t get why non-fans would take this much time and effort in criticizing these 2. If these people really don’t like these 2 artists, I don’t know why they can’t simply just not listen to them. Its simple enough, isn’t it? I can’t stand the Jonas Brothers, but I don’t put up a blog and come to every Jonas Brothers discussion in the web and start bashing them. Why the heck would I waste my time doing that? Its crazy. Its pathetic.

To be objective about this entry, I somewhat see the purpose of this is to promote originality, otherwise this is just useless rants from a stalker-hater. If this is the objective, then I should say the author focus more on badgering the local pinoy music scene and try to evoke change and not single out these 2. These 2 artists are no longer part of the OPM industry. Go to ASAP and protest. Go to the local recoding companies and protest. To take to the web where anonymity can be taken advantage of and where accountability is non-existent is cowardly, that is, if this is the author’s objective. I wish it is, because if it isn’t, I just wasted 10 minutes of my time with a useless hate blog.

  98. “…her management team wanted to release her as “CHARICE” the SOLO ARTIST, only when she turned 18. She just turned 18. As far as I see it, all their plans are coming to fruition.”

I just wanted to be certain that you weren’t inadvertently contradicting yourself there, considering the carrier single Pyramid is a collaboration with another artist Iyaz, but don’t get me wrong, I feel ya!

    • No I was not contradicting myself. It was in reference to our main discussion of originality and Charice not mainly relying on covers any longer. Pyramid was a collaboration, yes, but the fact is, its her own song. Its “Pyramid” BY Charice feat. Iyaz.

I do hope with Charice’s new album of originals, the Philippine music industry wakes up and realize that if Charice can do this, many other talented singers in the Philippines can too. The country has a very big talent pool. It will be such a waste if every talent we have will just cover songs. With their talent, they deserve way better than that.

  99. She’s also currently hailed as the ‘female Bieber!’, you know, so by association it seems her marketing team won’t let us forget that she has to be identified by another kid artist’s achievements, just yet.

    • She was called the Female Bieber not because she has to be identified by Beiber’s achievements but because they were both discovered on Youtube, they have similar story and she is starting to get known . Do you remember when this name came about? It was PerezHilton’s Blog that coined this when he featured her Eaton Centre mini concert. This was brought about because 500 to 1,000 people were expected to attend the event, but to WB surprise, almost 6,000 people came.

It is undeniable that Bieber is the hottest thing now. He is a very talented kid. But you must admit, talent wise, he can never go near Charice.

      • Charice might have the better vocals that Justin Bieber, but the latter has the “IT” factor and a BIG fanbase. It’s just how the world works. Michael Bay is given immense resources, but a guy like Rian Johnson can only get one project off the ground after a very promising and interesting first film

        • I don’t know about the “IT” factor… JB? I personally see the “Beiber fever” as a fad. JB is talented, no doubt. But I personally don’t think he’s THAT talented that he can last. JB who’s going into puberty now is in a critical stage of his career. Can he still pull of the high notes on his first songs? How is he going to look? What would be his image? His fan base are young teenage girls. And since his songs are not really full of profanity, and he has a clean image, moms like him too and also buy his album for their kids.

Right now it is uncertain if he would last in the industry. And I think he’s peaked. If he can pull off a new JB, similar to what JT did after NSYNC died, then I can see him continuing. For me, in my opinion, its highly unlikely. Good luck to him though.

Rhetorical Analysis/Critique is NOT to be taken literally, which is the point of my comment. The only marketing reason they have to associate with Bieber is for the obvious reason that either you FAILED to comprehend or would RATHER AVOID is really quite obvious and SIMPLE. BUT let’s give your reasoning a chance. AND so even if we were to take your REASONING ROUTE, here’s how it looks like:

Yes, Bieber and Charice did come from YouTube. Both have released albums of different successes; ONE; Bieber is a SUCCESS (having stayed in the charts at the top 10; #7 in 13 weeks) THE OTHER, charice (is #173 on it’s 6th week; I correct myself on my earlier post when I said 8th week). Who has more to gain by RIDING ON THE OTHER’S POPULARITY?!? Would you think Bieber? (Why does doesn’t Bieber’s camp say Male Charice?) Because it sounds SILLY?! And so conversely, MALE BIEBER does not?!

Here is where your REASONING ROUTE in it’s effectivity DEVIATES; ” Do you remember when this name came about? It was PerezHilton’s Blog that coined this …”

Why does it deviate from being effective, here’s why?: WHO coined it, is irrelevant. Where it came from IS IRRELEVANT! WHAT IS RELEVANT: THAT THE MARKETING TEAM of charice TAKES IT AT A CONSTANT REPETITION. This was also used in a marketing spiel in FRANCE to introduce charice in one of her appearances there. ERGO, this has a taken on a use of the coined name of “FEMALE BIEBER” as a MARKETING TOOL (obviously it’s not that she’s simply sharing the YouTube success, but that it’s a BLATANT MESSAGE: that she wants to get some of BIEBER’s crowd attention, IS THERE REALLY ANY OTHER WAY YOU CAN TWIST THAT?!?) ! Which was the point of my comment in the first place.

Oh, as for the ‘almost’ 6,000 crowd, dare I ask, was it a ticketted event, and that, someone ACTUALLY COUNTED the number of people in the crowd? But WHY ONLY 6,000?!? WHY NOT 6,876, or 5,989, or 6,983, or 5,792 ( I mean we can do this probably INFINITELY!)

DOESN’T PERFECTLY ROUND NUMBERS get an aching doubting little voice in your head mumbling, that IT’S INCREASINGLY IMPROBABLE without any material support? THAT IS if you do a little MATH?

WELL HECK, IF IT WAS THAT SUCCESSFUL, why didn’t they just GO RIGHT AHEAD and have a SOLO concert at the Air Canada Centre there in Toronto (it can sit 8,000-10,000 http://www.theaircanadacentre.com/about/atozitem.asp?a_to_z_guide_id=75) ?!? Why the sudden hit and run? Why not a ticketted event; where someone can actually provide a material count of the number before it’s reported? Not a “ROUGH ESTIMATED” count, because that can be influenced by so many reasons (ie. who got PAID to SAY what)!

What did I say in my other comment before? “…ENJOY IT (all the marketing drool THAT THEY FEED YOU and THAT YOU’RE SO DESPERATE TO BELIEVE!).

Who was the source of the number, ‘almost’ 6000 (actually he said:Over 6000 people showed up! http://perezhilton.com/2010-06-07-the-female-justin-bieber)? Well, let me ask you this? WHY IS perez hilton NOT reporting for CNN or BBC or anything of ‘reputable nature’? Oh, I’m sorry, I GAVE THAT AWAY, that was the key word: “Of REPUTABLE NATURE”. His reputation that precedes him has NEGATED himself! CONCLUSION: perez hilton IS IRRELEVANT.

ANALYZE YOUR PREMISE, and realize why it FALLS FLAT:
“It is undeniable that Bieber is the hottest thing now. He is a very talented kid. But you must admit, talent wise, he can never go near Charice.”—-

IT’S CHARICE’S CAMP WHO ARE TRYING TO ASSOCIATE HER WITH BIEBER, he’s happily enjoying the top 10 space #7 @ week 13, charice is the one crawling from almost ‘bottom of the barrel’ (#173 @ week 6), AND BIEBER IS NOT saying MALE CHARICE(?!?). Hate to give you the empty VISION of the glass but RIGHT NOW, (REALITY CHECK) it’s Charice who can NOT go near him (his charts success rates), EVIDENCE shows undeniably! Talent/Smalent that is immaterial to the PROOF (that is RELATIVE), AT THE END of the day if we check next year TODAY’s current chart results, charice NOSEDIVED! Bieber is in the TOP 10 (im no fan Bieber but that’s just the FACT)!!

And that is why your PREMISE FAILS!

          ….

(Why doesn’t Bieber’s camp say “Male Charice”?) Because it sounds SILLY?! And so conversely,”FEMALE BIEBER” does not?!
          …..
His (perez hilton) reputation that precedes him has NEGATED himself! CONCLUSION: perez hilton IS IRRELEVANT and UNRELIABLE!

          …..

JUST TO CONTINUE ON THIS BALL, B’COZ IT’S SOoo MUCH FUN:
Also, by some stubborn misguided contention, some of you might say; “Oh, but I was there at the Toronto mall where perez hilton claimed over 6000 came, and I actually counted the people there.”

Okay, did you give out tickets, OR ANY MATERIAL EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE CLAIM, and WHY SUCH A PRETTY ROUND NUMBER?!? You stopped counting at 6,000 because you just GAVE UP?!? (But why?! You were doing so great! And the bigger the number the PRETTIER IT SOUNDS!!! NOTE: CYNICISM) You forgot what came after 6000? (Well,it’s usually 6,001)…..SO HOW ABOUT WE JUST GIVE UP ON THE PLAUSIBILITY OF THE “OVER 6000” NUMBER, and say A LOT OF THEM/YOU came (there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that report).

  100. Oh my bad ‘….other teen artist’s achievements’!’

    • oh by the way, I forgot to ask you, do you have solid proof also that the count to negate that report and that the count is not “almost 6,000? also there is absolutely nothing wrong mentioning that almost 6,000 came, is there?

  101. This is hilarious! The ignorance and negativity of a bunch of silly haters always makes my day! Like any single person in here could EVER do better than Charice and Arnel. And by the way, ALL American Idols started out ‘copying other artists’, now look at Kelly, Jennifer and Carrie. All are famous by starting out singing other peoples songs!

You know what? I highly doubt Charice cares what any of you (and I) think. She is doing what she loves and many people love her for what she brings to us.

Instead of wasting your time sitting on your fat asses being rude and trolling, why don’t you just enjoy her and be happy or at least stfu because you probably don’t have any balls in real life.

    • best comment of the lot

  102. Just like you were looking at yourself when writing it down, it must have felt so personal!

    THIS PROVES THE POINT PERFECTLY!!
The bottomline is when faced with A FACT and the TRUTH you resort to insults, more trash talk (for lack of intellectual rebuttal) and BULLYING!

Ignorance? Really? They do make such claims (female Justin Bieber):

    http://www.charicemania.com/2010/06/09/announcements/charice-the-female-justin-bieber-world-invasion/

“…Are you ready to discover the new Justin Bieber? Charice (a short version of her two names CHArmaine ClarICE), a singer from the Philippines became famous thanks to Youtube.”

“Who really cares about what any of you (and I) think?”….apparently you do, because you reacted to a simple fact. Congratulations, You have FAILED successfully!

This is cardcrusher’s blog, he’s entiltled to his OWN opinions and his space is to be respected because he has the freedom to hold his own opinions. What have I seen here? Mostly people who can’t respect other people’s freedom and their right to their opinions. YOU HAVE TO BULLY and MUCK AROUND WITH YOUR TRASH TALK!

See, point proven! I’ve seen what you really are.

    I REST MY CASE!

    • @nicht

Yes. People become wild. Most of the people who react are fans of Charice. And throughout these many months, perhaps even for more than a year, I’ve read blogs, articles about artists and Charice keeps popping up. Guess who pops up all the time too– this author.

I do not agree with their profanity. Not at all. But I can see why they are angry. With the author being so persistent in reacting to almost every Charice blog entry or Charice article in the web, his motives are in question. Its one thing to give an opinion, but it is another thing to give the same opinion everyday, everywhere in the web over and over again for months, perhaps even for years. It seems the opinion is no longer a mere opinion but a conscious effort motivated by malicious intent. What the intentions are, I don’t know. But his actions are very suspicious.

I’ve read several articles about Charice these recent days and I am glad not to see a familiar name in those comments. He’s been at it for a long time. It would be good for him not to troll everyday.

Oh, and yes, this is cardcrusher’s blog. But he does not own cyberspace. If he cannot handle the heat, maybe he should just disable the comment box or keep this blog private. A diary/notebook under the bed perhaps?

No one can control the minds of others. He gives his opinion, others will give theirs. There are many people here also who do comment in a civil way. And no matter what other people say, everyone knows that no one can take away your own opinion but yourself. So, needless to say, he’s always entitled to his own. To defend cardcrusher that way is like treating him like a baby.

If you are faced with facts that contradict your personal opinions, then it is up to you if you would choose to keep an open mind to correct your beliefs. With regards to Charice, the girl has been thrown with all sorts of junk already, especially when she was still starting out. One by one, as she moved forward, she consistently proved that all of those issues were either blatantly wrong or at the very least, highly debatable. And she proved them wrong not by talking back, but by achieving. So for the naysayers who just used their mouths, that’s gotta hurt. The girl is not there yet, at the peak, but based on the pace of her career now, slow but steady, I think she’s well on her way. Hopefully, other Filipino talents will follow soon.

      • @Chris22
You wrote: If you are faced with facts that contradict your personal opinions, then it is up to you if you would choose to keep an open mind to correct your beliefs.

I’ll be brief; you misconstrue the use of Antithesis (def.A figure of speech in which sharply contrasting ideas are juxtaposed in a balanced or parallel phrase or clause) and Epiplexis (def.Asking questions to rebuke or reproach rather than to elicit answers). I use Rhetorical Critique/Rhetorical Analysis in explaining the logic of my premise.

I find that a couple of folks are actually confused by it. Perhaps this form of grammar composition is a bit sophisticated for the audience at hand?

        • Oh, ok. So, to be clear with everybody… what does that mean? lol

Honestly man, an analysis? We’re talking about a teen pop star here not a controversial pulitzer prize winner. I don’t think you need to pull out a masters degree to talk about a pop singer. But by the looks of it, she’s really making a mark in the industry and in the minds of people that such an academic like yourself needs to pull out all his guns to try and prove the many positive claims wrong. I mean, with all the quotes you put in and all that etc etc…

I read some of your comments below… and yeah, I agree, the topic is boring. I couldn’t read through all you said… just the beginning and the end part… it was so long…

Anyway, I want to make this as short as possible. I must admit, I didn’t think much of Charice earlier on but she’s turning out to be something great and I think she could serve as a spark plug to let loose the enormous talent pool that the country has. She really had to prove that she deserved to be where she is today just like all the successful artists out there. I think what she’s doing and the things she has accomplished is more than enough reason for me to give her respect. Yes, I do think she is an extremely talented singer, her voice is now fuller and richer than before and I think she can improve even more. And I do hope she makes it to the top and stay there for years to come.

I agree with you I can’t even finish reading what you wrote you…lol, it’s pretty long, I guess when we all start writing and post the comment it’s pretty long but that’s the economy of the space I think, because it squeezes everything in a column. As for the masters degree, don’t know about that; my kind of writing is pretty ornery around here.

I can’t share your sentiments though, anything is possible with pipe dreams so you can have as many possibilities as you like. However, the flip-side of the coin also allows for the unsavory possibiliies that a lot of you folks may not like; which may be the the extreme opposite of what you expect and what you are all hoping for.

The business she’s in, unfortunately is packed with quick decisions that may just stop short such pipe-dreams such as yours, and you have to give a bit space for a reality check once in awhile so you don’t get disappointed, that’s reallly all the point I’m trying to point.

UNFORTUNATELY, I get other kinds of folks who go on the DEEP END because I don’t agree so easily. It’s also possible that because I see the ‘devil that’s in the details” quicker, and that I get to have very realistic expectations. I get to see and pick up the signs quicker, such us not really hanging on to every word of perez. I understand that upsets people too. Unfortunately, perez is viewed as a clown here in NA, and that makes the folks congruently who hang on to his every look very NAIVE!

I’m actually the opposite of you, I used to think she had potential, then all became mucky with the obnoxious and insulting fans and then noticing bad marketing, losing faith in that too. Then, I actually realized that I found her voice more tiresome the longer I listened to it. Look I understand you think she’s got talent, and she represents you, that’s awesome great! But she’s got herself in a competitive business! In competition, you got to compete! Even her talent, as it is packaged is NOT ABLE TO FIND A NICHE in mainstream, that’s the dilemma that’s she’s in.

As far as talent, you do understand that too is RELATIVE and that it only depends on how many are buying and for how long, for it to be really called a success! On my part, I’ve compared her voice to others and hers is not exactly pleasing to me (needless to say her obnoxious and insulting fans ARE A HUGE TURN_OFF), I’ve compared her to (i.e. Charlotte Church- she started at 11 singing opera/operratic pop, now 24, she’s sold 10.5M albums (no Oprah to back her up) is now worth 20M pounds; Nicky Yannofsky – 16 she sings jazz/pop, she’s also half-filipine by the way, she’s already had her own concert specials). How far and how long your girl will stay, only time will tell! Because TRUE SUCCESS can only be measured by the TEST OF TIME!

      • Chris
Face it. You and other Charice fans are onion skinned people. Instead of just stating that you disagree with a point and move on, you have to make a big deal out of it.

  103. Oh, and its not true also that the ones posting here, who are defending Charice, are the only ones who use profanity and insults without any connection with the topics discussed. There are fans and there are haters. I recently posted my opinion too, but I was in favor of Charice in that discussion. I got a message in facebook from a crazy person, who even took the effort to create a bogus fb profile to send the message. The dude was cursing me and my family. lol. The lunatic even said he’d kill me and thoroughly read through my profile. lol. I blocked the lunatic, of course. Lesson learned: keep profile private. The web is a nasty place. lol

Both sides have their odd individuals. If I was to choose who to side with, I think I’d rather be with the people who defend with just the basis of positive feelings rather than those who defend with just the basis of hate. Don’t want no negative vibes in my life. lol

    • Chris
Come up with screenshots of that person who reacted that way.

I’ve found that it would most likely be Charice fans who would act in that manner. Just take a look at what Berto has to contribute.

So you’d rather side with those only with “positive feelings”? Enjoy your cocoon.

  104. I agree with you 100% on your statement supported with facts. But, you could have presented your facts in a gentler way that fans like me would accept without resistance. It is not the fact that we are negating, it is the manner.

You must remember, she is just promoting her album in Canada, do you expect them to gamble to hold a concert in Canada, without knowing the reception of the people in the area?

Wow, Perez Hilton is irrelevant? and you are, yeah right. Not unless you reveal your real identity.

It was Perez who coined that name not Oprah. So do not accuse her camp on riding on his popularity when that name was coined. Unless you have solid proof that Perez works for Oprah. Meantime, we cannot assume that.

Yes when she guested Bieber and her on one episode that is clear marketing strategy. Nobody denies that and it worked. We also do not deny that Bieber’s popularity is just a fraction of Charice’s as of now. If his popularity score is 100, Charice’s score would be like 20% or less. That we do not deny.

As for Perez’s irrelevance, well, I knew Perez Hilton long before Charice was known, I only learned about you, when you started writing about Charice. Actually, Charice made you known. That is a fact. In our world, you did not exist until you started doing these blogs.

So between you and Perez, to us Chasters, he is more relevant. You should have mentioned RELEVANCE TO WHOM. Now I know you can negate this. Go ahead be my guest.

Charice did not stay long in Top 10 but her being No. 8 on its debut is already a big feat especially for us Filipinos. No Asians have done that in history. That alone, is a big honor for us. Her management is not targetting INSTANT success. They are targeting a long term successful career for her and you know this is a hardwork. In Bieber’s case, they are taking advantage of his youth. As Bieber grows older, his voice will change. How his management will handle it, we do not know, but I am sure, they know what they are doing.

In Charice’s case, her voices improves as she matures. This is the difference of male and female voice. If Liz Rosenberg, David Foster, Jaymes Foster and Oprah believe in her talent, am sure they have long term plans for her.

If Charice becomes more popular than Bieber and she stays longer in the chart, will you have the same perception of Charice?

You wrote: But, you could have presented your facts in a gentler way that fans like me would accept without resistance.

Do you want someone to cossett you and to hold your hand?!! You know where to go, I don’t have to tell! As far as the truth and the fact are concerned, they’re better served a’ll dente or SURGICALLY, specially since the FACT IS WRITTEN CLEARLY IN THE WALLS, or don’t take them at all (otherwise you’re free to continue living in delusion and self-denial, I’m sure it’s more comfortable for a lot that way). YOU WANT THE FACT SERVED GENTLER?, or you’ll DO what?! RESIST the TRUTH?! THE ONUS (def. burden) is on YOU! The sad part is YOU get to SUFFER the consequences of ignoring the “writing on the wall” (basically it means the warnings all around you)!

Clique wrote: You must remember, she is just promoting her album in Canada, do you expect them to gamble to hold a concert in Canada, without knowing the reception of the people in the area?

That would really work well if her marketing team is non-existent and they’re not REALLY THINKING, which seems likely. NOT to convince you of anything but seriously, she came here on the first week of June, at least a couple of weeks after the release of her album, ample time with all the radio airplay and radio promotions at play, and don’t forget weeks before the release was the PRE-ORDER spamming. Oh they had plenty of means to gauge the “RECEPTION of the people”. By the way, since you’re in the know, was there any MMV/MTV franchise appearance after the toronto mall freebie? Because in the very least if her marketing team cared enough to give charice the oppurtunity to have more exposure for the “RECEPTION of the people” they (her marketing team) should have gotten her a spot in at least one of those franchises locally as well. A concert by any consideration would have been a NO-brainer if the numbers they got in the market feelers (pre-orders, airplay/radio promotions etc.) were REAL NUMBERS with the added touted SUCCESS of the mall freebie show, then there appears to be NO LOGICAL REASON why such a hit and run affair.

Clique wrote: “So between you and Perez, to us Chasters, he is more relevant. You should have mentioned RELEVANCE TO WHOM.

I’ll keep this one short and sweet because I’m really getting BORED!! (Oh no. not with your writing, its admirable that you took the time! I”M JUST BORED WITH THE TOPIC!) Certainly, you have a point there!! I CANNOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE! (SIGH OF RELIEF) I simply would NEVER put myself in a popularity contest with perez. I personally would NEVER breathe the same air next to perez. But before you give yourself a pat, I hope you realize that you have denigrated the probity of whatever you stand for by choice of association. (AND YOU ARE SO FREE TO DECIPHER THAT.) And as for your WORLD, I much prefer that you/all chasters keep to it, because I now realize that by your choice of association YOU ARE MUCH BETTER staying in your world, and by all means DO stay there, you do deserve to be IN YOUR OWN WORLD.

The rest of what you said is REALLY: “ANNUS HORRIBLIS”, and I’m yawning far too much!(really its not you, its the topic) Like I’ve said before discussing charice present/future career is ear-splitting (read: need ear plugs) and tiresome as her singing. And lately it has become even more so to even pretend I’m interested or that I even care.

You wrote: If Charice becomes more popular than Bieber and she stays longer in the chart, will you have the same perception of Charice?

My response to you is succinctly: NICHT (english trans.: NO) Bieber was an example case study. We can do more: Charlotte Church who sang the opera ‘Pie Jesu’ at the age of 11 on live TV, who has sold 10.5M albums, is now currently worth 20M pounds, who has successfully crossover into multiple music categories (i.e. celtic, opera, operattic pop, pop etc.) and is just 6 years older than charice, and that’s just case study #2. So its AD INFINITUM, needless to say I REMAIN…

In FINAL closing: can I just ask you a question? Have you bought your quota of 10 or so albums to SAVE charice nosediving album FROM ABSOLUTE FAILURE?

I’m rather bored with all the HOT AIR BUT NOTHING TO SHOW!

Ah I see where you’re confused with your own question, or at least trying to twist it, here, your question was pointedly if I WERE TO HAVE THE SAME PERCEPTION IF THERE WERE CHANGES IN THE CHART POSITION?

The answer and refer to more details above is: NO! PERCEPTION WILL REMAIN THE SAME AS PER ABOVE, the chart position is only ONE aspect, SUCCESS in TOTAL is ABSOLUTE and MUST STAND THE TEST OF TIME! Other case studies such as Bieber, Church, Underwood, Taylor Swift, Beyonce etc. etc. etc. etc.. have more in their case studies to BACK-UP their success stories!

Your girl MUST HAVE A SUCCESS STORY that should stand the test of time not a MOMENTARY up and down dance in the charts WITH ONLY ONE ALBUM.

Talk to someone like me (skeptic) in 5 YEARS and tell me where you’re at then SHOW OFF all you want, then maybe then you’ll have something INTERESTING TO SAY!….SERIOUSLY, right now football or even baseball is more interesting!

  105. It is so obvious that you are so bored with the topic and yet you can write long comments.

I have bought more than 10 for your information. No to save her but to enjoy the voice that I love most about. And mind you, she is climbing back, am sure like Sarah, you have something negative to say. Even if she reaches no. 1, you will still have something negative to say.

Like I told you Sarah, try to look at things on a more positive way sometimes, it will not hurt. It will not make you less of a writer.

Oh sorry I forgot you are bored, I am cutting this off to save you from boredom.

    • Clique: I noticed that you mentioned above the name Sarah. Do you mean Sarah Geronimo? Are you suspecting that this girl behind cardcrusher is Sarah? Oh no you must be kidding. I really doubt that Sarahs brain capacity could match even half of cardcrushers sharpness. Common, don’t be partial. Maybe I can give you an idea. Try do some research in you tube for some interviews of filipino famous entertainers, by then you could tell who she is. There are only few filipino artists who have “brains”.

  106. This is a question to the owner of this blog:

Do you still see Charice as a copycat by the way she sang the Philippine National Anthem?

    • SURE you did, and you should keep on doing that, every time you post a comment just so to match the numbers, remember the ONUS to PROVE something, IS on YOU…now I’m goin’ on to something more interesting, like FOOTBALL season… YEAH! So HAVE A GOOD one. And by the way, you should hang on to every word you get from perez, maybe in the future you’ll find out the reason why, us folks over here think he’s a clown.

So Nicht, what will it take then for your perception to change? Can you make suggestions, looks like you have a lot of sensible ones.

Unfortunately, perez is viewed as a clown here in NA, and that makes the folks congruently who hang on to his every WORD very NAIVE!

  109. Just a question to Cardcrusher and Nicht:

Since you too seem to have an issue on their ORIGINALITY and IDENTITY, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?

You have presented the problem, you should have presented your suggestions/solutions as well. Kilometric write ups will not solve the issue presented.

    • I for one am airing out the problem. Awareness of the problem is the first step. Unfortunately, many react negatively when it is pointed that Charice has little to no originality and identity.

      • because you failed to present solutions, all you focus is on the problem, don’t you agree?

        • A good amount of those I engage with fail to see the problem. How can I present solutions when the people I engage with fail to see the problem?

  110. BECAUSE, to them there is no problem.

Since you have blogged about it, you could have presented both the problem and the solutions, for them to see both sides, so that you would not be accused of being biased.

  111. Again, Cardcrusher, for the last time, what should Charice do, so that she would not be accused of being a copycat?

  112. bakla!!! bakla!!! cardcrusher

    • ROFL. Another intolerant Chaster. I’m not surprised to say the least.

  113. LOL You are funny! And I pity you.

    • You are not funny, and I don’t give a damn about you.

  114. Whether its Copycat or not – if its good, its good! Mariah Carey is a Copycat, too – i.e. Michael Jackson’s “I’ll be There.” Don’t put your foot in your mouth! It’s difficult for artists to do original songs when they are so poor and starving! Charice and Arnel are great! They will have their original songs. You all damn critics – Just watch!

    • Guess where Arnel and Charice are now? Radio stations still play Journey songs with Steve Perry as the lead vocals, and Charice’s album is not charting in either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200. Musicians aping the songs already made famous by others are not acceptable.

  115. I suggest aspiring artists to get in touch with Mitch Morala. For Charice: Mitch with his brother Jun, composed the song “Yellow Ribbon.” It will be great if David Foster and Mitch collaborate to arrange this song for Charice. This song is a tribute to the late President Corazon Aquino. Watch for Alex Collado who won in the FilAm Superstar Singing competition in Houston. He lives in Dallas. Just recorded in Manila, the song “Bagong Umaga” composed by Mitch himself!

    • Cardcrusher:
You seem brilliant and sharp. And you are pretty well-oriented in the entertainment world. I bet you are one among them in the industry. And you have a tagalog tongue. For that reason
I only knew one filipino artist whom I admire for being so brilliant and fluent (after all her years in the US maybe). You sounds just like her, Lea Salonga.
      Is that you Lea?

  116. Cardcrusher, if you don’t like their music, then do not listen to them. Don’t waste your time on things that you do not like. Write about things that you like. I just cannot understand your problem. We are talking about music here, bwah. I’m Filipino and i like jazz so much. I know very few Filipinos like jazz but that does not prevent me from listening to miles davies, john coltrane, etc. Cardcrusher, i think you’re too uptight and prone to worry. Relax, bwah, it’s all about music. There is no problem here. There are bigger problems in our country you should think about.

    • how bout you why wasting time defending the mediocre talent.,..
this blog only enlighten the filipinos about what is really happening in our culture and music industry..
look at our opm right now,,
      all time revival..
      -=—
      ph at its worst.

      • I agree. The problem with some Filipinos is that they can’t take criticism like Airegin. Instead of accepting the criticism and move on, he/she would prefer that others only write about what they like. That’s not helping musicians and Filipinos in general.

    • Airegin
Stop trying to deflect criticism of copycat musicians by saying others should write about things that they are into.

You’re right. It’s about music, and Charice lacks originality and identity music-wise

  117. oh god..
cardcrusher is good in pointing out the real talent over the fake one..

  118. I agree with you that she did not make it long enough in the charts. Do you think this is an indication that her success is shortlived? If so, why do we keep on trying to put her down? Isn’t that kicking someone who’s already down? I’m just puzzled.

    • I’m not putting her down. I’m just stating my opinion (that Charice would not succeed with her album).

      • Nakakatawa basahin yung mga post dito, Para kayong mga lasing na nagtatalo walang katapusan parang mga sekta ng relihiyon paulit ulit lang sumakit tuloy yung tiyan ko. Hehehe Comedic blog b to.

        • I’m glad that your belly hurts from laughing. This blog wouldn’t be entertaining without the diehard Charice fans who can’t handle opinions that they don’t approve of. You should give thanks to their intolerance.

  119. your not stating your opinion my friend ..
    its fact-
    charice album is not failed..
    kpop is more global..

  120. Check this out!

OMG was she trynna be Mariah? That is soooo mimicking.

She sucked hairy monkey balls in the clip, yeah?
Forgive me, but I love Rihanna.

I believe what this guy is saying is that doing a cover makes you less of an artist, which I think is nothing but BS. Try to do some research, you will see that half or most of the artists today have at one point, prior to being big time stars, done a cover of their favourite songs from their favourite singers which this blogger is saying one big form of mimicry/loss of identity/unoriginality.

Charice was just doing covers, so was Arnel. It just so happened they were lucky enough to be discovered.

Video above shows Rihanna singing Hero and apparently “mimicking Mariah” – which is a an epic fail – thus being totally unoriginal that makes her not an artist as what the blogger was implying. Bad news. So for you young kids, beware of singing covers, because for sure, someone, somewhere in the world thinks you’re the biggest copycat the world has ever seen.

  121. cardcrusher, it just bugs me to see, someone like you wasting your time trying to put down someone else because you value your opinion so highly.. oh please…

Charice fan or not, why cant you just take your opinon aside, listen to how she sings (her songs, or otherwise) and just enjoy it instead of bashing her ‘she wont make it, her album will be a total failure, she’s just a copycat blah blah blah…’ such negativity!

  122. why so many filipino are so butthurt when criticizing fellow flip .. Insecurity. Don’t you get it? Filipinos feel inferior to foreigners so they get angry when they are being joked. They get sensitive when being criticized by foreigners. It’s that simple really.

    go to antipinoy.com

  123. Owner of this blog must be stuck in the Philippines having a lousy life. hahah. Frustrated about your life? Sadly insecure about yourself? I can sense that you’re seething in jealousy, hence trying to use this blog as a way to vent. So what if Arnel or Charice give the public what they want? They fit a niche, they’re happy about it and so are their fans. If you’re not happy, that’s your prerogative, but it sure is a waste of time complaining and whining about it. HAHA! Very immature to be doing this. You should spend time improving yourself and your life instead. I’m sorry your life has sucked so bad that you are resorting to putting down others who are finding success.

How is your hell hole treating you? LOL

  124. alam ninyo, all i see lying down bloodied on the floor of this blog are asians.
mga patriots and music lovers, please allow our asian artists time to evolve. it’s hard enough to break into the music industry and make a living from it with the discrimination coming from non-asians, why make it much harder with this grief coming from us? these artists could use our support and “suggestions”.
Re the latter, it’s really more effective if they are still alive or sane after all this bashing.
There are other ways to skin a cat, this way extinguishes passion.

  125. RIP cardcrusher

  126. You define the words CRAB MENTALITY and HATRED. Hatred for things that are beautiful and good. These people have talents. Call it whatever you want they CAN sing and they are happy to share their talents. Why don’t you do the same.. Oh wait, maybe you don’t have one? Then you are an epitome of JEALOUSY! Please don’t confuse freedom of speech with bashing. LOSER!!

  127. This Site is history. Since Charice made it to 2 of the worlds biggest music industry US and Japan.. Enough with this nonsense.

  128. WOW! Everyone is wasting too much energy on hate.

Music is meant to be enjoyed if you don’t like it simply push a button to turn it off.

I love listening to music especially Asian music, i dont care if i have to search for its english translation in order for me to understand it. Mandopop with its traditional sound, kpop with its electropop rythm, jpop on its band, opm with their love songs, etc. etc. etc.

I think asia have unique sounds jay chou have his r&b/hiphop songs with a mix of rock, bi-rain with his electrifying dance move, lea salonga with the clearest voice i ever heard, siti nurhaliza’s sweet voice, regine velasquez’ highest note using only chest voice, lee hyori’s love song, utada hikaru, ayumi hamasaki, faye wong, jose mari chan, boa kwon. jacklyn victor etc. etc. etc, only asian could produce that amount of royalties in the music industry. And i have high hopes for asia’s emerging talents. Why do they compare WG with Charice the two are on different genre. Asia is amassed with huge talents, let us stop competing with each other, i’m so fed up hearing comments like “we have the greatest singer” a great singer can come from anywhere. i know my comment has nothing to do with the article but dont you find it funny hearing an asian fight against an asian cause of an asian artist? Western countries never called us as filipino, japanese, korean, chinese or thai, they called us ASIANS, one race, right? we might start acting as one.

  129. what is it with you anyway? so what if they do covers of the great songs, all music artists have done that.does it concern you if they did cover and record the great songs from other artists? all you do is CRITICIZE, why don’t you think of good deeds that your country will be proud of? just like any artist from other countries who made it in limelight, they did their country proud. if you are Filipino, then you should be proud that you have your Kababayan representing you in front of other nationalities making you known as Filipino.i am not a fan of both, but i don’t criticize them, i have my OWN LIFE TO LIVE!!! this blogger is a shame to other bloggers…

  130. the writer is trying to be a smartass. what do you know in singing anyway? Singing is not easy. Try to sing and post it on the internet. Charice was discovered because of her unique techniques in singing. Even Lea Salonga was amazed by her!

  131. This is a really good tip particularly to those fresh to the blogosphere.
Brief but very accurate info… Many thanks for sharing this one.

    A must read article!
